Not to put too fine a point on it, but this form of competition doesn't even conform to the Rules of Golf, as there is no form under the Rules for a handicap competition where the handicap is determined in an arbitrary manner for arbitrary reasons.  There is a huge amount of regulatory material outside the 4 corners of the rules about what handicaps are and how they are determined and this process isn't included.  And in the one place where handicap competition is explicitly mentioned within the 4 corners of the rules it specifies that:

(2) Handicap Competitions. In a handicap competition:

  • The player’s “net score” for a hole or the round is the gross score adjusted for the player’s handicap strokes.

  • This is done so that players of differing abilities can compete in a fair way.

That doesn't fit this case, since this "handicap" is not done "so that players of differing abilities can compete in a fair way."  It is done for completely different reasons.  So I think it would be nice if the tour Championship was a competition that conformed to the ROG.

I know a change is unlikely but somehow that has no effect on my disdain for this abomination of a process.  Nor on my railing about it every year when it comes up.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Yes it does. It's stroke play. It's not literally a "handicap" in the sense that golf uses the word.

I appreciate the attempted creativity here, but it conforms. It's four rounds of stroke play. Players simply start at a different starting point.

And if you want to think of it as a traditional handicapping, then everyone's handicap resets to 0 after the first round. And I disagree that these are not players "of differing abilities" — that's what the FedExCup standings show you - what players are of differing abilities and where they rank.

    • Yeah, the two-stroke penalty has you hitting four, but you're basically guaranteed you get to be in the fairway. So it's even better than hitting a provisional which you could, you know, hit in the rough, OB, in the trees, etc.
    • Yes, I'm going to cap it at 12 for Sunday; I need to finalize tee times with the course this week so I'm going to cancel the last tee time. Regarding games...here is what @iacas and I came up with.  I like the team aspect...and would encourage folks to dress accordingly!  🙂 There will also be a net skins game each day (with the remaining $10). Teams Saturday - Reserve Run 1. @MiuraMan, @vasaribm, @dennyjones, @StuM 2. @DinnerTime, @Carl3, @rwolfe, @ChetlovesMer 3. @Hardspoon, @iacas, @DaveP043, @billchao Sunday - Cranberry Highlands 1. @vasaribm, @MiuraMan, @StuM, @rwolfe 2. @DaveP043, @saevel25, @dennyjones, @billchao 3. @DrizZzY, @Daniel Mc, @Huffy, @OBlum 4. @Hardspoon, @iacas, @DinnerTime, xxx Rules Team play - blue vs. red overall. Winning team takes all (+$10 each). Each day is a separate competition. Each two-player team must count 9 net (80%) scores per nine holes, with a minimum of 3 scores from each player per nine for a total of 18 scores. Scores are counted relative to par. Scores must be decided and counted before anyone tees off on the next hole. On one hole per nine, the opposing twosome can select one of the players on the other team whose score must count on that hole as long as the team hasn't gotten to their 9 counted scores for the round yet. They must choose the other player on the other nine. (So, team A/B can force C/D to count C's score on hole 4, and D's score on hole 15.) This must be announced before anyone tees off on that hole. The total team score to par (net) will determine the winning team for the day.
