So I will be ordering a new set of irons. I plan to mix Mizuno MP-20 HMB 3-4 irons with Mizuno Mp-20 MB 5-PW irons. That will leave me with a loft gap of 6 degrees between the 4 iron (22 degrees) and 5 iron (27 degrees).

What is the best way to close this gap? Should I bend the 4 iron down to 23 degrees or bend the 5 iron up to 26 degrees? I know that bending clubs changes lofts as well, so I will need to consider that also.

Hi, I would look for 4deg. between irons. This will usually give you a 10yd difference between clubs.

My choice would be to bring the 5 iron down to 26deg. and check all the other irons, 6-PW for the same consistency.

Of course if your clubs are dialed in for a distance you know and like, then making a 1 degree change to the 5 iron only shouldn't make a huge difference.

I think it depends on how far you hit your 4 and 5 iron. It’s as simple as that. Other than that Stay out of the shit, call the zoo.

Good choice for set break. Mizuno recommends blending sets between 4i and 5i.

As for what to do with loft gap,

Here are your lofts for the MB20s:

HMB  Iron  MB

19*     3i     21*
22*     4i     24*
25*     5i     27*
           6i    30*
           7i    34*
------------------

You would need to test out the set at the mix point to tell for sure.

First you need to test out the MB 5, 6, and 7i yardages to find out MB internal gaps. If the MB 5i is a bit hotter than other faces, it could overcome the 3-degree loft gap 5i-6i and not be a yardage issue.

But, if the 5i-6i distance gap is less than 6i-7i, you might bend the MB 5i to 26*.

Otherwise, you might bend the HBM 4i to 23*.

The two HMB irons, being hollow-headed, might be a little hotter overall than the base MBs.

Again, test out the irons for yardage gaps. Don't bend unless there is a consistent gap.

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
