Hello Everyone

Over the past 5-6 years ive had massive problems with full swing yips. I gave up playing mostly for the last 2-2.5 years, but im feeling an urge to get back playing. I used to be quite good, i got to a 2 handicap then started to play dreadfully with full swing yips.

Ive read some good psychology articles and books, but one thing ive been noticing whilst watching a bit of golf recently is the swings of certain players like Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker are three in particular ive really noticed.

If we take this example firstly, i know its a driver off the deck, but Phils swing starts with quite a pronounced "lift" upwards of the club and then he swings back freely.

This is DJ in a taylormade promotional video. His swing again starts with a "lift" and then he swings back.

From a technical perspective, i dont know why they do this. But I notice from my own yips that ive really struggled to take the club back, and i cant start a swing at all. Ironically, i can chip and putt balls no problem though.

What i tend to experience is i want to push more and more weight into the ground, almost to the point the shaft bends, and i simply cant move the club back. It means i have no rhythm, no speed, and it throws the whole swing off. When i could play golf quite well i would swing a 6 iron at around 90mph. It would be 80 with the yips...if im lucky.

When i saw these swings that started with the club being lifted up and then swung, i kind of instinctively felt this might work as a swing thought to "start" the swing, the lift becomes the start of the swing.

What do you think about this? I can imagine it puts a reliance on hand eye coordination but i dont really care if the shots are bad, just so long as i can swing fast and not yip!

Thanks Everyone

I put the club just inside the ball, then just behind the ball, and go quickly.

I'm sure you could find lots of ways to stop pushing down on the club. Literally doing anything else might "cure" you of that.

I just looked at my latest swing videos. I do a bit of a waggle and a maybe three count. With the driver, I lift the head and put it right behind where I want to make contact. With irons and woods I tap down then lift slightly then take back. I also try to lower myself to the ball with my legs instead of reaching or pushing down with my arms.

I've played for almost 28 years without ever soling the driver behind the ball.
It was just the way I learned.

I do sole my irons behind the ball.

In the videos when I'm playing well I'm doing this. When I'm not playing well I'm not doing this.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

    • Day 228 4-4 More hip/chest turn and wrist arching. Working on hinging wrist a bit later. Foam balls.
    • Day 27 (4 Apr 26) - Worked with grandson on basic pitches/punches in the back yard with varied irons/wedges.  Wrapped up the day rolling some putts on the 30’ carpet I can set up in the yard to give varied terrain - and this carpet rolls almost too easy. A great way to figure a read and know that pace has to be near perfect to get in the hole.
    • A bit of a struggle today.  Just some thoughts/musings.  For the backswing, it is like I am never going to be moving on from this. I don't know if I can ever get to the point where the backswing isn't like over 1.5 seconds in duration. Which is probably not ideal. I would like to get to the point where I can just fling the arms back and up.  I have to feel like my hands are going to hit my right thigh from P1 to P2. If not then they like to move 2-5 inches towards the ball from P1 to P2. Then it's just bad from there. This feeling is my hands not gaining much depth, just maintaining depth from set up. From the DTL view, the hands head towards the camera.  While I am doing that, hinge the crap out of the club with my wrist only. Hinge in a way that the club is pointing at the camera at P2.  From P2, lift the hands straight up. I can get here, and still roll the club inside and get it way too shallow.  With the downswing. There isn't much here. I still can't get the flow of this or the sequencing of this to line up. It doesn't help that hinging from P1 to P2 just throws off my entire timing as well.
