Ok So I am very new at golf but had kinda a dumb question. Do you tee off on an actual tee for short par 3's or do you just drop it on the ground? Thanks.

I always tee it just barely above the ground, you need to get used to hitting your irons off a very low tee on par 3's. You will find your best shots will have your divit start after the tee...

Hitting an iron off a tee vs. the ground , there is a difference. Hope this helps

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but I'm assuming that you are asking if people typically hit off of a tee on short par 3s or if they just hit off of the grass (but always within the tee box).

There are varying opinions about whether or not you should use a tee when hitting an iron. Some pros will say that you should always use a tee as it is intended to be an advantage. Personally, I usually just give myself a good lie on the grass as this most closely mimics the conditions that I use to practice.

Please restate your question if this is not the answer you were looking for.

crawf061- That is what I meant by hitting it off the ground. I meant hitting from the grass in the tee box. Thanks for all the help.

I will put the ball on a tee on any regulation course's par-3. I will sometimes give myself a good lie at an executive course if I'm hitting a 7-iron or better, since I'm usually practicing for regulation courses when I'm at executives.

Why the tee? Well, at a regulation course, my goal is the lowest score I can bring home that day. And I've found, as have many others, that air offers less resistance to the club than dirt does. I tee it up marginally - you can't really see the tee, although you'll usually clip the tee and send the head of it flying and flipping. I think that looks really cool.

Technically it's up to you... but probably 99.9% of everyone would tee it up. There's no better lie than on a tee.

This is why I use a tee as well, personally I feel I have a better chance for solid contact using a tee. For a par three I will usually tee it very low so that the ball is barely above the grass(assuming the tee box has been mowed short).

I do not tee-up because the remaining 99% of my iron shots are off the turf and that's what I'm accustomed to. I just pick a clear area away from divots and lay it down. I've tried teeing up a par 3 and it just does not go well. I end up trying to scoop it since it's on a tee. It's a mental thing I guess.

I can pretty safely say I will never tee up on a par 3.

I tee it up, but I like to grab a broken tee and use that. Like the others said, all I'm looking for is making a perfect lie using the tee -- the ball sits only the tiniest bit above the grass. And, so long as the ground isn't rock-hard, a broken tee is usually more than sufficient to accomplish this goal.

Jack Nicklaus supposedly said something to the effect of not teeing it is ridiculous, as it is the cleanest lie. I can't find the quote, though.

However, if you want to use the par 3 course to work on your wedge approach game, that is different. Hitting off the grass could be useful in that scenario.

The few times I didn't tee up on a par three, I came up about 10 yards short..

Lesson learned.

Sometimes I tee it up, (when I want a higher shot to the green), Sometimes I make a tee on the tee box by using the club to make a mound. Sometimes especially on short Par 3's I just drop it on the ground and go.

Yea, I've heard Arnold Palmer say something about this too. Something to the effect that it's ridiculous to not tee it up and help yourself out with the lie. I used to never tee it up, but after hearing him say that, I starting teeing it up VERY low, and it makes a huge difference - think you just have to get used to it if your not doing it yet. Once you get accustomed, you never go back, imo

    • Then you have your answer, yeah.
    • After I reread my last post i realized I  wasn’t clear everyone agreed he isn’t welcome back to play with us. The group felt like his actions were bs and he won’t be back playing with our group.
    • Is just an exception. Is hard to be competitive hitting it just 165 ball speed. If only 1 long hitter plays well that week, he will have a huge advantage of the tee that is really hard to overcome by the short hitter. I remember playing the other day with a "+2" that was averaging 190 ball speed. My modest 260 carry (158 ball) wasn´t even close. Holes I played Driver + 7 iron, he was playing Driver + lobwedge.  Par 5's I wasn't reaching in two, he was reaching them with mid irons.. long hitters play others courses. Of course is not all about length, but it helps a LOT.
    • As a scratch player I would hate to play a 10, but is always usefull to see better players than you.
    • Not a good presedent, I wouln't let him participate anymore until he pays you. Is a stupid argument from his side and not the rigth person to enjoy a friendly match for money in the future. This should be supported by all the group, if not maybe you are in the wrong group.
