I've played Grayhawk-Talon and one of the Troon courses. These were good courses but its probably too pricey right now. I also played We-Ko-Pa Golf Club-Cholla course which i really liked but this was a little difficult to get to. I agree with one of the previous posts, your location is going to be the key b/c some of these places are not easy to get to. I haven't played the ASU course but i hear great things about it.

On business at ASU, so Karsten is an option. Thinking about South Mountain Courses (Raven) and a trip out to Mesa at Las Sendas. Have not played either of those before and they look to be beautiful places.

Skip Las Sendas. It looks much better on the web than it does in person. If you are at ASU, you gotta do Karsten! Consider Papago, its old style desert course and 10 minutes from ASU. The Raven is pretty good and not to far of a drive. As others have said, you can drive a long ways to get to some of the "name" courses.

Definately go and play ASU Karstens. Played out there in December and it was awesome. Great layout and a lot of fun. One of the better college courses out there.

Other than that, there have been some great suggestions.

I played the Ahwatukee Lakes course when I was down there... even though it was technically a par 3 course it was fun
âI'm glad I brought this course, this monster, to its knees.â

If money is no object these are the most memorable courses to play:
Troon North - Monument or Pinnacle
The Boulders - South
We-ko Pa - Cholla or Saguro
Grayhawk - Raptor
Dinosaur Mountain @ Gold Canyon (This is further away, but less expensive than the others.)

If you had to choose between Raven or Whirlwind which one would it be?

I live right by the 500 club in northern phoenix. I would recommend Estrella Mountain Ranch, Raven, Troon, Boulders (must play), Wildfire. Check out golfnow.com and look at phx coures.

I love to hate this damn game.

Well, folks, it did not work out the way I had hoped. My sis has been battling the big C for about a year and took a bad turn the Monday before I was too leave. Had to stay in Seattle and cancel the trip. Thanks for the great tips, and I am sorry that I will not be able to report anything! I look forward to my trip in November.

Papago has just closed at the beginning of the month for a (much needed) $6-8M renovation.

I'm not a fan of the Karsten course, but it certainly would be convenient.

Not so convenient, but a superlative golf experience would be found at We-Ko-Pa - Saguaro is my 1st choice, but you can't go wrong with either.

Longbow in Mesa is a fun layout in super condition and with better rates than the Scottsdale courses.

*EDIT* Just noted your recent post regarding your sister. Sorry to hear about that - hope things work out.
