I've only been golfing 3 years and always used ribbed grips. Working the ball more, it seems like round grips may be better... Do you low handicap guys use round or ribbed grips?

I generally use round. I have only used the ribbed when they came that way on the club. Not sure it isn't a good idea to use them to promote a proper grip (not too strong or weak).

I do my own re-gripping. I don't have time for lining up that reminder ridge. Those ridges are a pain in the @$$ and don't help me one bit. As far as working the ball, I like round for another reason. I am not feeling the ridge in an unusual spot. Ergo, I'm less likely to focus on that instead of swinging the club.

round.. ribbed grips seem to me to be a cruch. now i have found some grips with a very slight rib in them.. ex: winn pci hybrid.. may just be were they stich the backing but it is nice.. but grips of choice right now>> MCC cords and iomic sticky's.

Ribbed always. I found my grip had a tendency to "migrate" when I used round grips. With ribbed grips I know each time I grab a club where that ridge should be. One less thing to worry about.

I can't imagine why ribbed grips would affect working the ball. Do you change your grip shot to shot in order to try and work the ball? It would seem to me that would breed big time inconsistancy. I don't work the ball all that much but I certainly can hit whatever shot I need to regardless of the shape of my grips.

I use round grips. I picked up my friends club the other day, and asked him what was wrong with his grip and realizing that it was ribbed... I felt kinda stupid, but round is what works for me.

i get a better feeling using the ribbed kind.

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4

I re-grip my own clubs and like round. I also like the feel as I grip the club in my finders and they just feel right. For the record I like tour velvets and hate most of the new dual durometer grips although I recently tried Lamkin's crossline tour and found it felt quite good. Take this for what it's worth, round or ribbed make sure your grip is the correct size if you want to work the ball so you can properly release the club through impact.

Does anyone plan on trying the upcoming MCC Align grip?  It sounds like a major advancement in the reminder grip category.

How?

It's a reminder rib. They've been around for decades.

Seriously, I'm asking… what's the "major advancement" in this?

There's a dedicated and textured ridge on the exterior of the grip as opposed to just a bump underneath the grip.  It sounds like the "reminder" might be more prominent.

Meh. It's still just a textured raised bump.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
