Hello all,

Have started playing golf as a way to be out of house and general flexibility, and health. Although a golf instructor is good, don't have unlimited money to pay for private lessons. That is why I am here, to be able to escape the sand trap with some help from other players who are already great at playing golf. And hopefully with some help of a good online teacher with videos, to teach myself the core principles of golf. Hope to have my Garmin R10 at home soon next month, then I can train some at home as well.

Don't know how my Golf with end, at least there is a valid start: good health and seeing more of this world then 4 walls.... ^_^

Just successfully passed my golf handicap exam: HCP 54, extra 3 swings per hole.

Please explain the process to me.   I'm from the US where we just go get clubs, arrive at a course and play, no exam required.   I wasn't aware of any handicap exam.     Educate me please

Here in the Netherlands, my local Golf golf club will ask you to do a short 1 day course:

- learn basic rules

- introduction golf clubs: Sand wedge, pitching wedge, irons 9,7,

Then we are allowed to play locally at that club.

But for playing outside our home golf club, I passed the 2nd course:

Played holes with a PGA golf professional and checked my general knowledge (rules + points calculating) and if I was able to play fast enough. I had to hit a few good swings, so that the ball would go far enough for a beginner. I had a good day and was able to play quiet well. A few miss hits, ball into the lake, lost a ball into the woods. But in general I was good enough. And were allowed to become a member of the golf club and register NCF through them, allowing me to play anywhere around the world.

Next club: 3 wood training, then driver. still a big challenge for me.

Thank for posting @chihwah_li. I think the various processes different golf organizations/clubs use is interesting. You're actually required to maintain a handicap?

@mohearn: Actually no, after the first course a person would have enough knowledge to play at the club locally, but cannot register any handicap local club or trough NGF.

Excuse me, NGF stands for "Nederlands golf Federatie". In the Netherlands the NGF registers the handicap for us Dutch golfers.

That is what I know so far.

Now , I am waiting for my Garmin R10.

    • First - glad to see these popping up again. Now to the topic at hand - I would rather be option 1.  If I know how far it's going (I mean a yard or two) I can always play to the wider parts of the fairway and/or the green and still do reasonably well.  Now if I could just really hit the "number" that well.
    • Day 2 (10 Mar 25) - Long day of driving to dr appt with son.  Thankfully got in one of my fave putting drills (two ball side by side) - the goal to have both balls come off the putter face equally by having them come off the putter face as close to the same time as possible.  First few rolls - the toe was leading the way as that ball flew off the face.  By the end of the drill both balls were basically equal off the face, rolling to within a couple of inches of each other.  Nice drill of focusing on squaring the face.  BTW - I was using the old Odyssey DF992.
    • Day 161 - 2025-03-10 Got a decent, long session in. Focused mostly on the backswing feels, and moved on toward the end of the four hours (not all hitting balls, I installed a motion sensing light switch in there too, and worked with a student over FaceTime for a bit) on the downswing feel.
    • Day 31: 3/10/25 Backswing drills with the ProSendr. Reinforcing iron play from yesterday.
    • I wrote up a response as a YouTube comment that I won't be posting on YouTube. What an absolute load of garbage. Your arm doesn't "slingshot" or "bounce" - you use the muscles in your arm to move your arm and throw the baseball. In one video you've managed to get roughly five areas of science almost completely backward. At best, your video sets up a straw man as nobody is telling golfers to do anything like what you show when you're demonstrating a "bad tennis player." The golfers you see on your lesson tee must be from a completely different world than almost anyone else on Earth, because most golfers do something more like what you prefer to teach - their arms are too passive for too long, they stay "up" too long, and are carried out toward the ball from the top. From there, they stall their pivot, often early extending while right tilting to TRY to not swing 15° left. You know… we have ways of measuring these things these days, but you're still stuck with a poor understanding of how the golf swing works and are peddling it to some unsuspecting and unfortunate souls. But, I know… you teach "athletes." I hope for your sake that's just code for "dumb" because anyone with even a room temperature IQ understands that there's nothing truly "effortless" about the golf swing.
