Here is the scenario. You are visiting a friend, Mike, for a weekend trip and you guys decided to play a nice, friendly, relaxing round of golf. You didn't bring your golf set over since you originially didn't have any plans to play during your visit.

You guys go to a nice local golf club and while getting ready in the locker room, you guys bump into 2 of Mike's friends. You chat for a while and they decide to tee off with both of you. They are all of a same handicap as you and Mike for the purpose of this scenario.

Over the conversation, one of Mike's friend gets real cocky and challenges all of you for stroke match. $500 per stroke... (eg: If Mike scores 2 more strokes than you, then you get paid $1000 and vice versa) Now the friendly, relaxing weekend game turns out to be a serious situation that will have direct impact on your personal fianancial statement.

You run up to the pro shop upstairs and you will get to choose a whole set of bag of one brand (For the purpose of this scenario they will all be customized for your personal specs including shafts, swing weight, length, lie etc whatever you name it) No choice for balls. All balls will be Titleist Pro V1/V1x.

Now, every stroke will mean you could win or lose thousands of dollars in the next 4 hours or so. No more ego, no more style, no more brand loyalty, and only score and performance means everything to win...

Which company club would you go with?

(For this scenario, parent company holding two companies, for example Aschunet holding Titleist and Cobra will not be considered as the same brand. Only with the exception of Callaway and Odyssey, Cleveland and Never Compromise will be considered as the same company. If a company does not produce it's own line of wedge or putter then you are allowed to play with any putter or wedge of your choice.)

Please write your handicap and the choices of clubs that you would use for the brand you pick. Thanks.

I chose Ping mainly for their combination of playability and forgiveness.

Ping G10 Driver, 3 & 5 fairway woods - Great forgiving woods that gives great distance IMO.
Ping G10 21* hybrid - Could use the forgiveness and distance with accuracy.
Ping S58 4-PW - Not as great as Mizzy's in terms of feel but forgiveness and control all in there.
Ping Tour W Wedge - 52* and 58*. Not a big fan of their wedges but could live with it.
Ping Redwood ZB - Black Satin. Nice putter that I can confidently use.

I would use TaylorMade because I use lots of TaylorMade clubs now, and I would be more confident hitting clubs similar to those that I have hit before.

Well... my initial thought was to pick Adams... I love my irons and hybrids, the new driver a3 XTD pro is decent, but wedges. So I went with Cleveland, they make my favorite wedges (clubs I score with) and I like the CG reds. I haven't hit the new driver, but the old one isn't too bad. They also have an acceptable line of putters.
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

My concern would be with my game, not the equipment.

As long as the clubs were of a type I was familiar with, I'd be happy. In fact, I would be looking for clubs the same as the ones I have, be they good or bad, because that's what I'm used to. This would be no time to change, and, again it's the archer, not the arrow.

I would have to go with Cobra, mainly because they are the only clubs on the list that I have a good deal of personal experience with. Not most peoples first pick, but I had to go with what I am comfortable with. I love my cobra driver, and the Baffler hybrids are awesome, though I don't own any yet. I also really like my FP irons and wedges. I am no good with a flat stick, so that doesn't really matter to me.

As someone else mentioned, I would be more worried about my game than the clubs.
In the bag:

Hybrid: 3i 845s Oversize Plus 18*
Irons: FP 4-SW
Wedges: TruTech 60* LW & 56* SWPutter: Deep Red Fluid Feel 7Balls: DT So/Lo (discontinued) or e6+ (trying these out!)

Worrying about game is not what I am trying to find out. That is a totally different topic by itself. Please just concentrate on choosing the equipment for this scenario. Thank you.

I would have to go with Titleist, as I am already using 735.cms for irons and vokeys for wedges. I could sacrifice a little forgiveness going from my clevelands to titleist woods, and could make the switch from my yes! tiffany to a scotty (but wouldn't want to.) And to those saying they would worry about their game more, that's fine...but you're still gonna have to walk up to that club house and grab a bag, regardless.

Halo 3i 22°

the best choice for this scenario is taylormade. they make great drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, long and forgiving irons, decent enough wedges, and the rossa putters have a soft feel and true roll. i wouldnt want to sacrifice anything off the tee in this scenario, so the driver is the deciding factor for me.

I would go with Titleist. I'm going to use the driver about twelve times and I love the 905T. I'm also going to putt around 29, 30, times and always have wanted a Scotty.

I'll just have to find a set of Titleist irons that will remind me of my MP32s.

    • Had to correct the distance - should have read 5,400 not 5,500  yds.
    • Had to report this one - played Minnesott again today with my son.  We played behind the Friday Men's group and had a decently paced round.  My round started off par-par-bogie.  I was feeling good to be +1 through three.  Played the next two par - par and then disaster hits - well I thought it may be the unravelling of +1 through five.  Tee shot on six is a hard pull hook into the ditch separating four and six.  I know the ball is lost and re-tee - hitting three off the tee on this par five.  Long story short - what should have been at worst a bogie became a triple 8.  Now I'm +4 through six holes.  Get a solid par on seven (which I celebrated as a solid recovery hole).  Eight is a birdie and I'm back to three over.  Nine, a par 3 over water, finishes par for a 39 front.   We roll to the back to where I birdie ten (the toughest hole on the back) to be -1 after the first hole on the back, +2 for the round.  Par eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen - that was an in the zone moment.  Have to note that fourteen - the second par 3 on the back - I hit the tee shot just short right of the flag.  Easy pitch with the 56 should put me close for a tap in par.  It does not happen - as I duff the pitch to about 3yds closer.  I reset and this time I nip it nicely only to see it land and slowly roll to the cup and drop in for a chip-in par save ( a first).   We get to sixteen and I am thinking this could be a really good round.  It's also a par 5 and I hit a solid tee shot.  I'm about 220 from the center of the green and figure I can layup with the 3w as there is a nice landing area in front of the green and it would play nicely into the typical distance I hit this club.  I'm sitting about 50 yds from the flag to the right hand side.  I overcook the 56 and see the ball bounce off the back of the turtle green.  I hit an easy 56 again to see the ball roll to the other side of the green.  Long story it became a 3putt double.  Now I am +4 through sixteen.  The last two holes are solid pars - one an up and down, the other a GIR two putt. Finished the back 1 over at 37.  Total score is a 76!  A new personal best.  Best "all around" play through the bag to date.
    • Day 562, May 17, 2024 Spent a LOT of time on GEARS stuff today, so while waiting for imports, exports, and all manner of things, I did some rehearsals in the mirror and camera in my basement.
    • Day 16 (17 May 24) - Plans to play a local course with a good friend fell through, got with my son to play Minnesott.  Turned out to be a great day of golf - as we were playing behind the Friday Men's group, pace was steady but not rushed or dreadfully slow.  Had a solid day of ball striking - managing 11 of 14 fairways hit, 8 GIR and 5 nGIR, 27 putts (including a hole out chip in from just off the green to save par with the 56deg wedge).  Shot a new personal best of 76 (39 front / 37 back) from the gold tees (just over 5,500 yds).   Was a good day and my son had a decent day for him as well with an 88.
    • Day 312: Chipped for a bit indoors off my mat. Working on good contact and direction.
