I think the ballspeed comparison is a better measurement of power or driving distance because conditions vary so much and this forum is worldwide. Ballspeed considers clubhead speed and quality of strike - so ultimately power.

so my question is do you know your maximum ballspeed? If so what is the highest you have recorded and on what device?

my clubfitter's indoor thingamajig said my highest of the 5 i hit was 165. the rest were 158-ish. i have no idea how accurate his device is. it gives ball speed, launch angle and carry/total distances, but i suspect the distances aren't all that accurate.

At the course where I work we had the Ping van there and on their launch monitor my ball speed for five shots was an average 176 mph with the fastest being 181. That puts my club head speed in the area of 125 mph. The golf ball distance was 310 or so.

I am going to guess no that accurate since a PGA pros average 5 iron is somewhere in the neighborhood of 130 mph. Someone who murders the ball would be in the 150's. Your driver ballspeed must be 200 mph!

You misread what he wrote. You took the "five i hit" as "the five-iron i hit". He's just saying he hit five balls with his driver, not his five iron.

I made the same mistake at first until I re-read what he wrote. Would have helped if he'd have capitalized the "i" but oh well.

Ahh I see said the blind man. That makes more sense now. The whole noncapitalized "i" thing throws me off every time.

My only recorded ball speed with the driver last January was an average of 154 for 10 shots. Whether that's good or not I don't know, but being indoors and in "perfect" conditions, I don't know what I can take from it anyway.

154 is pretty good

means that you are swinging at over 100mph - 154mph ball speed is a longway above average

what device did you measure on? as they all vary

My driver ball speed ranges from low 140s to 150 in the test I had at the TM performance center in Orlando in January -- I was still hitting my driver for crap until I had the stock RE*AX shaft cut from 45 3/4 to 44.5.

Oddly, it was just about the same range with my 3 W.

My testing was done on the Golf Achiever II. I've heard mixed reviews on that monitor.

i have hit on most devices and in my opinion the golf achiever is possibly the best

i took part in the european indoor longdrive on the golf achiever and the numbers for ss bs and actual distance seemed pretty good

161-164. My driver swing speed is 110-113. So what's that like 1.45 smash factor? Not perfect, but good enough.

So which is a better indicator for fitting and evaluation swing speed or ball speed" or is only the total package, with launch angle and spin rates needed before it means anything? I recently tested some drivers on my highest swing speed 100 ball speed was 135, at 98-136, 95-134, 93-133 was my straightest and most repeatable result. I did get a couple over 100 but trust me they were uuuuugly. I am now trying to work on my balance and rythym so that I can put that 98 in to play with better contact and get 10-15 yards when I need it. The monitor said it was only going 5-7 yards farther with substantially less accuracy than at 93.

Not to hijack the thread, but that's the number we should compare. How do peoples smash factor change with handicap or do they? At Hotstix in Az, while i have a rather slow swing speed, 98-100, I was getting decent ball speed 142-147 with decent smash factor numbers 1.45-1.47

Maybe some could add this info in addition to ball speed if they have it??

I agree. I think you need both numbers to get a realistic estimate of driving efficiency. I've swung in the low 120s clubhead speed and got a ball speed of around 155 because I hit it dead off the toe. So it wouldn't be honest for me to say, "My swing speed is in the low 120s."

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
