Shooting Your Age -

  1. 1. What parameters would you set for claiming that you shot your age? Note: you may select more than one standard

    • The course must have a minimum par of 72
    • The course must have a minimum par of 70
    • The course must have a minimum par of 65
      0
    • Any par is okay with me
    • The tee played must be at least 6,000 yards
    • The tee played must be at least 5,500 yards
    • The tee played must be at least 5,000 yards
    • The tee must be rated for your gender and the tees must be rated using the USGA course rating system (3,000 yards is the USGA minimum for 18 holes)
    • Any yardage is okay with me
    • Something else. Please describe

If you would (and could) turn a par 3 into a par 5, the course would become a par 72, its length would be close to 6500 and it would most likely play easier, not harder, for a competent golfer. QED.

I think your logic may be flawed here. Are you saying your are likely to card a lower number on a 500 yard par five than on a 200 yard par three?
While I might be more likely to make a par on a 500 yard par 5, I'm much more likely (by a ton) to card a 3 on a 200 yard hole than I am a 500 yard hole.

Take it to an extreme, build a course with 18 difficult par-3's. I'm still going to finish with a lower score than I would on a course with 18 very average par-5's.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I know what you mean but.. 18x3 is always less than 18x5

Of my last 10 rounds, I'm averaging 4.0 on par 3s and 5.9 on par 5s.   For me, I'll take a par 5 under 500 yards over a long par 3.  Then again, I have a glaring weakness in my short game.

I am talking relative to par. It's easier to score a 5 on a 500 yards par 5 than a 3 on a 200 yards par 3, for say a 10 handicapper. It's the other way around for a 30 handicapper, who has more difficulty stringing good shots together.

So turning a 200 yard par 3 into a 500 yards par 5 raises the par from 70 to 72, increases the total distance by 300 yards, but is also easier (relative to par) for the 10 handicapper. {Note that the course rating would increase too, while the slope may vary little]. That's all that I am saying.

My standard would be mini golf. Been shooting my age there for at least 20 years.

Re: Shooting ones age…

I agree with USGA approved 18 holes course criteria…

and I think your suggestion of at least 5000 yards is good… but I also think your suggestion regarding course rating of at least 65 makes sense because some courses although short are rather tight with lots of water and very long ( un hittable/ unfindable rough)….where as a longer course may allow you to spray the ball left and right without much penalty….

i shot 70 ( par) on a 5300 yard course that is just so…. Lots of water to collect errant tee shots and lots of mature trees and exceptionally long ( two foot) high grass. At 71 years I was thrilled with my score ( haven’t shot par in 15 years) but my son has me playing WAY more golf these last two years and my game has improved greatly…

but I have yet to brag…. ( as much as I would like to…) I am officially waiting until I do it on a 6000+ yard course….despite the fact the that course  may be easier and more forgiving that my regular 5300 yarder…. Which I live to play….not because it is short, but because it has “ character “….

Cheers to all…/r

keep swingin’

    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
