Titleist ZB Forged vs. AP2s

Here are my questions :

Which set is for the more skilled player? Which set is more powerful/forgiving in the 2-5 iron range?

I'm looking (for next year) for a set where the 2-5 have more juice while the 6-9 are more bladed. It seems to me like the AP2s are players irons with juice giving the best of both worlds but what about these ZB Forged? They look sexy as well.

It doesnt sound like a bad mix of clubs at all. I think you could do well with the AP2 long and mid irons and a more traditional blade for the scoring set. I would assume the lofts on the two different sets would be similar because titliest makes them both, but the shafts wont be. You would probably have to stick the project x shafts in the ZB's to make them more consistant with the AP2's. But if you can get titliest 695's for the scoring clubs, go for those instead. I own a set of 695's and have hit both Z models alot. They are basically the same club and the 695's would probably be a little cheaper.

I hit both clubs at a local demo day a few weeks ago. I went into the day thinking I wanted the ZB (for the progressive nature of full cavity to muscleback) or MP-57/67 and just tried the AP2 since it was there. For ME, the AP2 came out on top out of the 8-10 clubs I hit. The biggest reason for me, just one man's opinion, was the forgiveness of the AP2 was much greater than the ZB. Don't get me wrong, the ZB was an excellent club when hit on the sweetspot. The AP2 felt just as good. I hit a couple of shots off the toe and high on the face with the ZB and they went nowhere, except high and right. The same type of mishits with the AP2 went straighter and further, without vibrating to my toes. Plus, every shot I tried to hit (high fade, low draw, low straight, big hook, etc) was there with the AP2.

If I knew I would hit >95% of my iron shots in the sweetspot, the choice might be more difficult. But since I am not a tour pro, the forgiveness of the AP2 made it the club for me. Now if only I could figure out which shaft...

This is just one person's opinion after hitting some balls on the range, not an expert by any means.

What on earth are you talking about here, regarding "juice"? Are you suggesting that there is a distance/power difference between clubs?

If there is a distance difference between irons you are comparing, it relates to loft. Thereis no such thing as clubs with more of something that only the player can provide.

what i'm talking about...let me explain.

take two baseball bats. an M9 louisville slugger thin barrel vs. a zorian light handle/heavy barrel. which do you think is going to drive the ball further? the heavy barrel, obviously.

what i'm asking is which club has more beef to it, more "juice" as i eloquently put.

OK - I think I understand, but I'm pretty sure you'll find that the feeling from a baseball bat is much more direct than that of a golf club and I doubt very much whether in golf there are any differences in how far different clubs will drive the ball. The difference between, say, a hit from a solid wood baseball bat and a hollow aluminium one is significant in feel (and sound) but I don't think the analogy transfers to golf. And I include the higher tech modern bats you mention, even though it might seem logical. If it were the case, I think that guys like Adam Scott and Steve Stricker would not have adjusted so quickly to the AP2s. I think their distances are the same as with their old clubs. Ads which claim extra distance are nonsense - they just call 5 irons 6 irons.

I was hitting the 755's, and just went to the AP2's on Tuesday. I have played twice on the Robert Trent Jones Trail with them, and I will say that I love them. They set up great to the ball and are very crisp. The feel of the AP2's compared to the 755's are very different in my opinion.

Another set that I really liked where the MX25's. I didn't care for the MP57's to much.

My though process was that the MX25 and the AP2's felt the same to me, so then I went to looks and the AP's looked better to me than the MX.

Are the ZB the mixed set? If they are what I am thinking of they have blade type irons in the higher lofts and cavity back in the lower lofts. Sorry, I don't know much about that set. I just wanted to give you my viewpoint on the AP2's.

Good Luck, and I would suggest taking the clubs out to an actual driving range to hit off of real turf. You should be able to get a demo in a 6 iron of each. This will help you to see the ball flight and ease of working the ball....if thats important to you.
