Golf Data App or Program Recs

Recommended Posts

After a season of trying to work with a Garmin watch and the CT10 sensors, I’ve decided that the sensors aren’t as valuable as I thought in terms of data collection and analysis. So I’m going back to scorecards. Does anyone know of an app program that can help me track and synthesize analytics for information like whether your approach shot is on the green, left, right, short, long;  fairways from the tee; # putts; and GIR?

That said, I will still use my watch for distances. But then again I also have a rangefinder for that.

Why not consider the ShotScope H4 or one of the other programs from ShotScope?

I'll second the H4.  The data is excellent and it's easy to use.

Fair question, and I haven’t looked at ShotScope. But here are my thoughts I posted on a FB Garmin user group. If Arccos or Shotscope can address these issues I’d be open to considering them.

1. Average distances for each club weren’t as helpful as I expected it to be. While it is probably helpful for clubs you only use for full swings (driver, woods, long irons) when you start using clubs for different situations (chip, pitch, punch, etc) the distance information gets noisy. I know there is a way to delete certain shots so the data isn’t included but I don’t want to add extra work.

2. Tracking the round takes more time to clean up or monitor along the way than it’s worth.

3. The analytics like whether your approach shot is on the green, left, right, short, long, is something I can do on my scorecard. Same as tracking fairways from the tee, # putts, GIR.

1, With Shot Scope you go to your dashboard once you sync the round and you can edit a shot. Rename it to positional so it will recognize it as a chip or pitch and wont affect your overall distances for your clubs.

2. You don't have to do anything during your round except tap the club and tap number of putts. Penalties or whatever can be added once you get home.

3. Yes you can do it on your score card. But Shot Scope has a better memory than you do, plus it gives you exact yardages, it does all of the math, gives you accurate data to help you.  It takes the human out of it in a good way. I cant see playing without it now. I turned around and went home because I forgot it. I kept a golfers log in my bag for a time some years ago and used it once or twice a round, tried keeping notes on a score card, then just didnt worry about it until I got turned on to this. If you want to go old school, check out thegring.com like @Missouri Swede said. All of the cool kids have a Shot Scope :)

Thanks @snapfade I’ll definitely consider it.  If you have any thoughts on why you chose ShotScope over Arccos I’d be interested in knowing.

The cost, for one… Even at over 50% off, Arccos is nearly double the cost of ShotScope, plus the sensors on the ends require batteries. And it renews annually for an ongoing cost.

As noted by others: You might care to look into ShotScope H4.

If you have an iPhone and Apple Watch, and you keep your phone on you whilst playing, you might also consider the ShotScope Connex.

I've seen others speak highly of the 18Birdies app.

Somebody on another forum recently praised the Golfshot SwingID app.

I plan on giving The Grint a try.  They recently added shot tracking and have announced they'll soon be adding auto-tracking.

I haven't actually used any of these, myself.

To echo what @iacas said, I did not want to have to get a subscription plus the cost. Some of the regulars talked it up here and I read up on it and it is so idiot proof I was like why not. Plus, you get 10% off if you use the code "THESANDTRAP" on the Shot Scope site. Now I'm thinking of switching to the X5 watch since I use my Garmin for yardages and have the H4 on my pocket this combines best of both worlds. Will it ever end????

Thanks for the suggestion about Connex. I didn’t really pay attention to this option. But I looked a little more and it’s supposed to work with any watch that has NFC. So it might be a good compliment to a Garmin for me.

I just downloaded this and will give it a try. If I go to premium subscription it’s offered at $50 because of some discount I have.

Whatever's reading the Connex tags has to have an NFC reader.  I don't know about the Garmin watch, but, I know the Apple Watch doesn't.  Secondly: The device has to be able to load and run the ShotScope Connex app.

Yeah. I figured that out after I posted, and I couldn’t edit my post to correct it. Long story short, Apple Watch locks down their NFC to limited functionality (no surprise). I sent an email to ShotScope about whether their program could work with a NFC watch and Apple iPhone. I’m guessing “no”

In order for a device to register the club tags it has to have an NFC reader.  The Apple Watch has no NFC reader.  I don't know if any smart watches have NFC readers in them.

I'd bet the rent the answer will be "no."  Even if the Garmin watch had an NFC reader (seems unlikely), ShotScope would have to make a version of their app to run on the Garmin watch (does the Garmin watch even support loadable third-party apps?) that would communicate with the ShotScope app on the iPhone.

The way Connex works with an iPhone and Apple Watch is you tap the club handle against the phone (which can be in your pocket) to register the club.  The Watch is kind of a slave to the app running on the iPhone.

If the Garmin watch had an NFC reader, and if it supports loadable third-party apps, and if ShotScope made a Connex app for the Garmin watch that would communicate with the ShotScope Connex app on an iPhone: There's no reason it couldn't work.

I'm a fan of The Grint and I've been using the basic version for a few months. The standard stats it offers are good enough for me. But I prefer jotting down my scores on a paper card while playing instead of using the app in real-time. Later, I enter the data into the app after the round.

    • Amazing picture.   One of my favorite vacations!
    • I can see how some people might not think or know it is how they are pushing against the ground that causes your hips to spin in a certain way. It makes sense when he describes torque. Also, that PGA Tour average is like 2x more push with the left leg than the right leg.  Yea, if someone is very right side dominant, or just has a weakness in their left leg, they could struggle with early extension no matter how they try to keep the tush back. Even if you feel your left leg extend, if the direction of the force is not pushing the hip back and up behind you, it can push your leg back and away from the target more, which is not ideal.  Pending muscle weaknesses and mobility, I almost feel like early extension is solved at this point.
