My question is does the back of the left wrist need to point at the  target at impact or can it be facing the right of the target. I have found that I have to strengthen my grip to hit it straightish. For the life of me I can't supinate my left forearm enough to have it point at the target at impact. Is this a match up thing with my body anatomy?

It depends on how strong your grip is with your lead hand. A strong grip will actually be slightly cupped at impact and probably point right of the target.

Won't it be player specific depending on how strong/weak their grip is?

Kinda like how some players bow their wrist quite a bit at the top of the backswing and others are flat or even slightly cupped. I believe those are byproducts of their grip, or at least they have a grip that works with their desired wrist positioning.

It's somewhat difficult to say without seeing a swing of yours, but good chances are there are probably bigger things that need improvement in your (and just about every other amateur player) swing rather than the exact positioning of your lead wrist at impact.

I understand what you all are saying but shouldn't your grip be based on your natural ability to rotate your forearms without having to consciously thinking about it. I used to play a lot of golf and getting back into it.  I can still shoot in the 85s, because a good short game, but I miss several shots right until I strengthened my grip a hair and it got me thinking about this.

Nothing I wrote contradicts this statement, although some people have to consciously rotate their forearms in the golf swing. Feel is different for everyone.

Find a grip that matches your swing/release pattern. If you’re hitting the ball straight I’m not sure why you’re worried about the back of the lead hand pointing at the target.

Some people have to consciously think about it (as a "feel" or a "swing thought") because they don't. There's very little about the golf swing that's "natural."

    • Day 8: 12/17/2024 Okay I took my new PPJ swing thought to the range today. I wasn't sure I was quite ready to do so, but I'm glad I did.  When I got it right it was good... really good. When I got it wrong it was a major fail. I hit lots of really ugly ones. But I didn't let that deter me. I stayed committed and focused on the PPJ and I avoided any temptation to go back to what I was doing before just so that I could "look" better at the range. I'm pretty excited about what I saw when I got it right.  I hit the 6 iron mostly (nearly all block work today). I also hit about 6 balls each with the PW, 8I, 5W and Driver. Those had varying degrees of success. I did crack one drive that let me feel and see what the changes will look like once I get fully trained.  Anyway, I'm going to go back to the mirror work for a couple of more days before bringing it back to the range. I do feel like if I can get this right my swing will improve a lot. So I think its worth the effort. I liked the way it looked on GEARs when I get it right, and I like the results I got at the range when I got it right. Now the goal is to work towards getting it right more often.
    • So I think it's that they can't just bend the shaft or hosel to get it to a new lie angle. They adjust that and it changes the weighting, so they have to then adjust all the weights to get it balanced again. I get the impression that it's a bit of an iterative process and they do it all in the US, so they're paying US labor costs to build it and make it work how it's supposed to. Whether you believe in the tech or not, I think that's a true statement.
    • Ah, the old EE in the backswing move. Chest going back and staying down doesn't help.
    • Extremely outward path with a very closed club face. Maybe unless you have a stupidly weak grip, like right hand way over top, I don't think the grip is necessary highly correlated to this.
