Do You Need All Wheel Drive?

Recommended Posts

(edited)

I found this video interesting...

Based on the math and physics, the tires matter more than the type of drive system you have on the car. Really AWD is really needed if you are going to encounter steep inclines. FWD doesn't perform much better on sloped than RWD.

I mean… yeah, but also:

  • 7.2 -> 17.3
  • 8.2 -> 18.3
  • 14.1 -> 32.4

That's the difference in tires. But the difference in FWD to AWD is also:

  • 8.2 -> 14.1
  • 14.1 -> 24.6
  • 18.3 -> 32.4

(And that's just skipping to the second layer, not starting at the first like going from summer tires to winter tires.)

I see it as putting all-season tires on with AWD lets me not worry about the tires much at any time of year.
