Hey everybody, new member here so I hope this is fine.

My swing is starting to make me lose hope. I hit balls around 1 hour 5 days a week but lately I’m not seeing much progress, it feels like I’m just grinding my swing faults and/or trying new stupid drills and swing thoughts.

The swing is “playable” in the sense that I have gotten my handicap down to 15 and I hardly ever slice the ball anymore and I’m very happy about that.

What’s the problem, then?

  • Hitting the ball makes a hard ugly sound.
  • High flight path.
  • Very short carry. I used to hit the 7i 140 yards (which is short!), but now it’s even worse, I’m down to 120.
  • Inconsistent direction.

I have twice lucked into a good 7i shot, 165 yards nice small draw, so I know that I’m physically able. Interestingly, I rotated the club ~20 degrees open at setup to get those.

I’ve filmed my swing and it’s highly consistent:

  • At impact, my hands are above the inside of my trailing leg. This also happens to be right over the ball, so no massive flip, but no “lag”.
  • At P6, my hands are a hand-width outside my trailing leg, instead of above, and the shoulders are rotated clockwise. Maybe my hands are getting stuck behind my hip?
  • My head tilts right at the beginning of the downswing, it’s sort of like I’m trying to use power from my head. This only happens on full swings. Unsure if this is relevant for these issues.

One annoying thing is that I can almost hit as far with a 90 degree closed club face at address. Ie, setup with the club toe pointing at the target and take my normal grip. The majority of the hits have a nice “clicking” sound and go surprisingly far. Some hits catch me off guard in how little they feel and this twisty thing makes it very intuitive to get the hands "in front" of me. I’ve been trying to replicate the same feeling with a neutral club face, but have failed so far.

Thanks for reading all of that, I hope there’s hope for me but I feel my swing very easily reverts to what I’m doing, like a magnet.

Welcome to The Sand Trap. Best advice I can give is to start a swing thread in the member swings section. We can take a look and offer some advice.

Thanks boogielicious. I would love to do that but I’m hesitant to show myself on the Internet due to privacy concerns. “no pain no gain” though.

There is something to be said for having other people look at your swing. Just do it.

What you’re describing here is a classic ballstriking drill to promote shaft lean and eliminate flipping.

    • Perfect!  I think I'll leave this alone and let the rest of the group figure it out.
    • Day 9 (29 Jan 25) - Weekly nine hole round today - as we play up a set of tees, only put seven clubs in the bag: driver, 3wHL, 6i, 8i, Pw, 54* and putter.  Was a good long game day, wedge work was off.  Neat thing seeing the green from non-typical approach distances.  Playing a ‘new to me course’ tomorrow…full bag will be in tow.

    • The putting green itself is fine. It's the same green we have here. They just need to learn how to chip "into" the grain instead of just down-grain all the time. You have to hit it solid. The launch monitors and the simulator software are garbage right now. Nobody wants to say anything bad about the LMs because Tiger is a partial owner or something. The software has 3Ws stopping in ten feet on the green, and balls bouncing all of 11 yards after flying 311 in the fairways.
