Oil on the club face?

Good morning,

First of all I don't like to see rust on the face of my club, although it's inevitable. So how many of you or do you put oil such as WD-40 or EEZOX on the face of your club (then wipe it off), including your wedges and putter?

I did it for a while but someone told me not to put oil on the club face, especially wedges because it affect the ability to spin/check the ball.

What is your opinion on this matter?

The more rust on my wedges the better. I never would apply any type of oil to my clubs, period.

I dunno, I have never heard of applying oil to irons either.. I played wedges that were designed to rust but I never got the effect that was supposed to happen with them. I practiced so much that the hitting area was just always raw from hitting and cleaning the grooves out. I did the wrap in in a moist cloth thing and I still wore off the rust. Through it, i discovered raw faces dont last very long. My next set of vokeys were tour chrome.

I use WD-40 to clean my clubs. (Advice I was given by a ST member)

I did not apply it directly to my irons, though. Instead, I applied it to a damp cloth and just wiped them clean.

I always apply WD40 to my irons after a round. When i got them they came with a little leaflet saying that they should be treated as such to avoid rusting.

In terms of performance, i honestly don't see what change it could make, the layer of oil will be microscopic, and surely rust on the club would make it less true (as in flat), yet this doesn't seem to have any adverse affect.

I've never had a rust problem and I just wipe my irons down good after play and practice.

I've never considered WD40 and quite frankly wouldn't want it on my clubheads...not matter how careful I was it would get on my hands and bag and eventually work it's way to my grips. I don't want any type of oil / lube within miles of my grips.

I thought those rusty wedges were all the rage???

I've also heard that oil may react negatively to clubs, especially wedges. . .I've also played wedges that are supposed to rust. You CANNOT clean these clubs like you do normal clubs. Wire brush, or the club cleaners at the range. . .otherwise, and rigorous cleaning with soap and water: rust = gone!!

I don't think oxidation is necessarily bad. If you're driver is rusty, its just damn old, the finish is gone, you need a new driver, hypothetically!!

try alittle oil on your drivers face.... you should hit the ball further with it. Vasaline works the best.

is that in the rule book? i once was in a pro-am and a guy told me to rub chapstick on my driver. Worked great. Almost out drove him on the next tee.

Uh, yeah.

Source: Rule 4-2 4-2. Playing Characteristics Changed and Foreign Material ... b. Foreign Materia Foreign material must not be applied to the club face for the purpose of influencing the movement of the ball.

Please look these things up for yourself next time. Rule 4 is called "Clubs" and it wasn't very hard to find.

so this whole tread is in the wrong. Don't put any oil on your clubs even the WD-40. Sounds good to me. I was just saying what someone told me to try and it worked. Might be a good time to buy stock in vasaline or Wd-40. Now everyone will be tring to get the extra 10 yards on there drives with it. LOL

It doesn't mean that the whole thread is in the wrong! The rule clearly states "for the purpose" which means that if you put oil on the club to hit the ball further then that is a breach! If you do it with the intention of looking after and cleaning your clubs, that is not in breach!

putting oil on the clubface will reduce spin i dont care how microscopic the layer is. it doesn't matter if its a wedge or a driver it will affect the playability. if its a forged iron, yes it will rust, you should have known that when you bought them. next time by cast they are usually made of stainless. besides you cant feel the diff between cast and forged anyway.

Much like a fine layer of water or dirt will affect performance, and yes i do know that forged clubs are more prone to rusting, but unfortunately mizuno don;t make the mp67's as cast, so telling me to buy cast is ignorant and irrelevant!

Alongside that, the care leaflet i got with my forged mizuno irons specifically said "after use clean thoroughly with water and apply a thin layer of lubricant to abate rust", i think they may know a little more about golf club care and performance than you! So next time, i may buy forged, and i will not have a problem putting a fine layer of oil on them to keep them looking pristine!

When I started this thread I should have make a poll about how many people oil their clubs or not.

Several weeks ago I met an older gentleman that play with Mizuno MX-25 and right in the middle of the club face he has a round rust spot the size of a quarter. I also noticed that he always wipe down his club on every 3-5 shots.

While I think the battle scars are kool and you can show to people how well you struck the balls, that round rust itself doesn't look appealing to me. I guess some people like it rusty some don't.

A week ago I played one round with Mizuno MP-100 (yes, it's the 100th Anniversary model) and the face wasn't cover with any oil whatsoever. I didn't notice any grabbing effect on any of the shot. Everything seem to be normal. BTW I traded the MP100 with MP32 and I'm happier with it. The MP-100 reminded me of my friend's MP-14 which was a bit harsh when you didn't hit the sweet spot. The MP-14 also still had the original Golf Pride corded grip and the rubber was dead. That didn't help it either.

Speaking to leaflet that came with Mizuno, I didn't get it when I bought my MX-19 awhile back. Can I find that on Mizuno website somewhere?

i agree any amount of oil on the club face will affect the spin. best bet just keep your clubs nice and dry and clean.
