I went out to a course near my house the other day around 5:30 so I could squeeze in a quick nine. The starter informed me that I had to let a pair of older guys making the turn tee of in front of me, so I complied and watched as each of there three tee shots totaled about 136 yards.

I joined up with a threesome also making the turn, and we played significantly faster than the god awful twosome in front of us.

Seven horrible holes I watched these fossils top, shank, and whiff just about every shot so I fanally decided to roll a drive up to their feet. Sure enough, when I got up to my ball, they were still in the fairway where they had been when I teed off, probably on somewhere around their 32nd mulligan of the round. I stood next to my ball, leaning against my club in hopes that they would see my exasperation and let us play through, but no.

On the 9th tee box, I was completely fed up. They were roughly 260 out into the fairway so I decided to air mail one over their heads, and sure enough I cranked just about the biggest drive of my life and watched it sail over their heads. I yelled "fore," but this did not coax them as I saw one of them staring at me. They then rode up to my ball and one guy hopped out of the cart and chucked my ball into the river on the left.

Now, I know intentionally hitting over someone is just about the worst thing you can do, but these two guys were the slowest golfers I had ever seen and refused to let us play through them, despite us waiting for them on just about ever tee box.

So...who was more rediculous? Me or the slowest golfers the world has ever seen that gunned my ball into a river?

The ones that gunned it into the river.

Me and my dad are pretty slow golfers, because of that, anyone that waits too long for us, we just let play through.

Although, you were both ridiculous.

I have to go with you - as the story is stated. You were faster and apparently the better golfer. Instead of "hinting" you wanted to play thru - grow some nad and ask. Simply put "Excuse me gentlemen, we seem to be playing a bit quick today. Do you mind if we play through?"

Goes a lot better than lobbing a Nike Platinum over their melons.

Make no mistake neither party is innocent of poor play but IMO you were the more egregious as you hit balls at them and never bothered, to you know, actually ask to play through.

You were the most "redicilous".

Golf ettiquette suggests that you request to play through. Not ride their tails until they get the drift. If you had hit one of them with your tee shot, you would be legally responsible (I.E. you could be sued).

If you were only going to be playing nine holes then why did you decide that you should hit over them on the ninth hole? You were so close to being done that it doesn't serve any good.

I would say you were in the wrong here. If there slow play bothered you that much instead of starring at them and acting impatient you should have asked if you could have played through, and in no circumstance should you ever hit in to someone(twice no less) in an attempt to speed them up. I would never touch someone elses live ball, but what they did by "chucking" yours in the lake was completely justifable after your irresponsible childish action.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

For the record, I wasn't particularly proud of myself after doing it, I know it was a crappy thing to do, I just lost my cool for a moment, probably because after a solid 6 holes at +1, I went double, quad, but that's a pisspoor excuse for that type of action.

Thank you for the bluntness, and I'll be sure to act more maturely next time.

I would say you where technically in the wrong here, but increased your awesome factor by 10 by sending a bomb over their heads. Good work, my man.

I'm afraid you were more ridiculous. You said you had to wait for groups to make the turn but then refer to being on the front nine (9th tee box). So, did play start on the back that day? Slow play sucks but there are mature ways to handle it. Also, it appears you were sneaking in the middle of some people's rounds by yourself. Anyways, you could have just asked to play through. I imagine they were already aware of you putting heat on them, as you mentioned you sort of did. That's probably one reason your ball ended up in the river. The other is firing one over their heads which just isn't cool, no matter how slow they are.

You were both rediculous, but tossing a ball into the water is about 1% more rediculous. You could have seriously injured someone had you shanked the ball and hit them. It's still putting people at risk.

A ball tossed into the river isn't going to injure anyone, but is very uncalled for.

I think the ball in the river was pretty "called" for. You could have seriously injured one of them all because they were playing slower than you liked??? Obviously they were very new to the game, and may not have been up to speed on letting people play through. IMO, You are lucky you got off with just a ball in the river.

i have a question....

is it just me or do rangers not do their jobs anymore? it seems to me that a ranger should have been all over that, and if they were new to the game, explain to them the art of letting someone play through

but you shouldn't have hit into them, and i applaud your guts for posting that online

i would agree with some of the others that you were a little out of line. for me, golfs always been about relaxing and just chilling out. even if a "quick 9" takes me 3 hours, its still better then being at home with a pms'ing girlfriend thats yelling at you for drinking the last mountain dew in the house even though she doesnt drink soda

if it were me and i were in a cart solo from the others i was playing with (you said you joined up) i would have just separated from them, and passed the guys in front of you. at the rate of play described from them, im sure there wasnt anybody on the hole in front of them and you couldve shot ahead with little or no complaining at all.

now if youll excuse me, im gonna go figure out what else my girl doesnt want me to eat/drink, then consume it

i have a question....

props for posting as well. im in las vegas and most rangers/marshalls out here finish there days up around 3/4pm. in the summer out here, 3,4,5pm are the hottest hours of the day (temps of 110-115) and not many wanna go out and play a round in that oven.

i have a question....

Unfortunately there are some out there that just don't care. We have had one come up to us and tell us our fivesome was slowing down play when we were waiting on every shot for the threesome in front of us. Apparently the group behind us didn't seem to notice that we were standing around waiting to hit all morning and called the pro shop. Once we explained to the ranger what was going on, he didn't bother to ask the threesome to speed it up or let us play through.

You must be pretty long if you waited till they were 260 and sailed on over their heads!

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
