(iacas' response in the Jack vs. Tiger post got me thinking)

implemented one event a year in which players had to use old equipment? So every player in the field was using the same equipment?

I think it would be great for the fans, but would the the players even want to do it?

Define "old".

Why would they do that? It doesn't prove anything at all and most players would see it for what that would be - a circus side show and decline.

I'd like to see an event with 3 clubs and a putter.

No. Won't happen.

The Pro's would probably think its the most rediculous idea ever.

What would be cool is seeing all the golf greats from the 50's and sixties (the ones that are alive) play in a tournament.

I'd love to see it personally, I know for sure that these HUGE Par5's today wouldn't be reached in 2 by many if not any of todays players...(and I'd love to see creative shot making from many of todays long hitters)....but it won't happen (not only because the players would turn it down) but also, just like in baseball, fans love the long ball, hence fans love to see long drives and reachable Par5's

? I dont want to see crappy golf. I want to see good golfers with the proper equipment to let them make great shots.

Geoff Ogilvy played with old clubs in a round with Golf World (UK mag) - was really interesting. He hit an old persimmon driver and loved it. He hit pure strikes most times, sending the ball out 270 or something, and said he'd love to hit one on tour but contracts, distance and consistency meant he couldn't really.

I have a feeling that a lot of tour players today could not hit the older clubs. It would be fun to see them trying something different but the money in the game these days dictates a lot.

There is an event in Scotland every year, the World Hickory Championship ( http://www.worldhickoryopen.com/ ).

I'd love to compete in this - I'll have to get some persimmon clubs though!

What was the yardage of the 1967 US Open? I am just using this as an example as Jack Nicklaus won that and everyone always compares Tiger and Jack.

I am going to say it wouldnt matter if Tiger, or the rest of the tour, played 60's era irons and persimmon woods if the course was shorter. I dont think Jack was playing on 7600 yard courses.

According to my US Open Almanac, the '67 Open at Baltusrol was measured at 7,065 yards.

Here's a link to Brandt Snedeker's round with 80's equipment (or so) in a USA Today article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/golf/...oldclubs_N.htm

I think it would be fun and far from crappy. It would be great to see good players make amazing shots with hickory-shafted clubs and 'iron irons'. but I agree it ain't gonna happen.

Sounds like an interesting idea but it would not work because of the contractual problems- also many of the players have their gear custom fitted. Its unworkable on many levels but it could be a good idea for an exhibition tournament.

What about getting all the players to use the same ball?...ie forcing the players to use 80 compression balls in a tournament- that could yield interesting results.

What about getting players to put their own money in to the pot like i do on a Sunday morning, as opposed to sponsors providing the prize money?

I think it would be much more interesting (and likely) to see the pros play with only a few clubs like another fella here suggested. Driver, 7-iron, putter.

It's not JUST the new golf clubs that's making the game a bit easier now, then "back then" but also the golf balls. People overlook that but the ball goes a lot furthur now too with all the new innovations to the design of the dimples, pieces, etc. of the ball.

I'd like to see an event with 3 clubs and a putter.

Many years ago I used to watch a television programme called the one Club Challenge, with an invited well known tour player. As I remember most chose a six iron - and scored close to par.

No player would want to do that. everyone has a style and to give everyone the same clubs, they would have to change their swings and tempo's to be able to hit these clubs.

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
