my question is: as a 14 handicapper, would i be stupid to buy a set of clubs(Mizuno MP-67's for example) designed for much better players? i'm sure my game might suffer at first, but would they be overall beneficiary? i've only been playing for two years, play twice a week, driving range twice a week. so, i'm quite a golf fanatic, going for pro lessons soon too.

i've knocked off ten strokes from my handicap since last summer, and it's still going down. anyways, i'd really like to see your opinions. i'm using a low priced cavity back(fitted) right now, although my wedges, wood, and driver are top of the line. should i go with the "ultimate" blades or go in another direction, such as Cobra S9's or something like that? btw, i sure love my Mizuno wedges,MP-T's. they have such a feel of quality, like a surgical instrument.

If you can hit the clubs at the driving range or better yet on the course to try a round with them, why not buy them. It sounds like you play enough and are heading in all the right directions to play these clubs, why not?

If you can hit them, treat yourself and buy them. I did the same for the mp33s that I am playing. Infact don't let anybody talk to you out of the clubs.

As long as you can hit the clubs, that all that matters.

good luck, just my 2 cents.

Very true if you play alot which it sounds like you do if you cut 10 strokes off you handicap. Most people would say wait until you are a single digit handicap until you even consider a club like that but it is all in what you are looking for in a club. Do you want the club to let you know if you are making a bad swing or do you want to be forgiven by the club even when you don't strike the ball well? I just changed from right handed to left handed and I play forged irons even though I'm about a 25 handicap. It has been two months since I switched and am so thankful that I made that choice because my swing is improving by leaps and bounds already. I broke 100 in 4 rounds and should have shot in the eighties but I am not as consistent as I will be. With players clubs you can literally feel where you are striking the ball on the face but with so called " game improvement" clubs you have to really pay attention to the distances you usually hit the club to know if you hit it a lil fat because all the contact feels the same. Maybe I just love golf so much and really pay attention to the details but a well struck golf ball makes a distinct noise if you know what you are listening for. I call it " cracking eggs" because it sounds like the noise you hear when you drop a uncooked egg on the floor. And by the way isn't gettin feedback from the club " game improvement " at its best.

I would and grow into them at the range. Nice goal and I doubt if it would take you very long. It may not be the best analogy, but you don't see rookie race car drivers taking out inferior equipment until they win a race.

14 handicap? being that many pros have switched from blades to cavity backs, i would give it a good test drive before i spend my thousand bucks for mizuno blades

You sound like me. Golfing two years; trimmed 10 strokes off my handicap since last summer, play at least 4 times per week, etc. etc.

I got the MP-57's three weeks ago and love them. I had RAC OS before and these thinner irons actually IMPROVED my iron game, believe it or not.

if you have the money then make the investment and work yourself into them... especially considering your overall improvement and dedication to the game. I'm actually hitting my MacGregor blades better than I ever hit my cavity back Titleist 735CM, go figure

I upgraded from my old clubs to titteist 695 CB's and I love them. They're not blades but they are pretty close and give me just as much feedback on my shots. I can ussually tell what went wrong in my swing instantly. Fixing that is anouther story... but I find they are really helping me. I say go for the MP-67's!

update

as it turned out, went with a cavity back, and a different company. i chose Ping i5's,green dot, TT shafts. quite a shift from the pretty Mizuno blades, but i had to get what worked for me. very pleased with the feel of the ball striking, although so far it's only been at the range. (this weekend i will play two rounds at the course though.)

Sorry, I missed the original post. You made a great choice. Players' irons that aren't blades are, I believe, the way to go for almost anyone seeking to improve their handicap. The i5s are great clubs - and you are going to find your swing improving as you hit them.

I say if you try them and can hit them, then go ahead and play them. Whatever works. I would generally say that having some symblance of cavity at least until you are a single digit might be a little less frustrating but again, whatever works for you. Good luck.
In my Vantage bag:

Irons:AP2 (Project X 5.5) (3-W)

I would recommend you first go to the golf store and after selecting a few choices for clubs hit all of them and check the results of the launch monitor and simulated golf driving range to see which club was the best fit for your next level of golf. The fitter may also make some recommendations.

If you can take them to the driving range or better yet to play a round of golf at your home course you will then confirm the fact that the Mizuno's are the best choice or not for your game.

ok , off i go to play a round. i'm playing an executive style course in about an hour. i'm thinking i'll get more iron play on this style of layout.

tomorrow, again, another course i'm playing is a true links set up , which will also encourage good iron play.

    • Day 21 - Good session with driver and 6i. Hitting real golf balls is quite a bit different from the foam balls, still getting used to that change.
    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
