Used to play 9 ball in HS and college got rated well and played way too much in smoky bars. Felt like I was becoming part of "The Color of Money"

What's wrong with that? Maybe you could be dating Katie Holmes if you had kept it up...

I played 3 cusion billiards and 9 ball alot over the years. I used to compete in alot of local pool room tourneys. Its a great game and is alot like golf in a way. You can go out and play great for a week, then the next time you play not be able to make a ball.

I have been around it for all my life. If you have any questions feel free to ask..

I've got a lot of questions, but I've been hopping some billiards forums to get the answers. Thanks for the offer. Perhaps if you're in Erie we can play a little in my pool room (as yet not built).

Used to go to the bar and play about everyday after work. Well marriage has settled that down a bit though. My favorite advice no matter the shot, "What ever you do hit it really really hard." That advice usually works well to distract your opponet on the tee box as well.

I have learned that hitting the ball hard only serves to shrink the hole in pool just as it does when putting... so please excuse me for not taking your advice.

I tried to get serious about it 7 years ago. I remember alot of fancy billiard bar/restaurants opening up. We use to drink and play forever. I think a good cue stick at that time was a Meucci..but I'm sure there are so many now that are great. I just remember how well crafted and balanced custom cue sticks were..works of art. 9 ball was about the only game we played.

What kind of stick you have Erik?

I don't yet, but I'll probably get a Sneaky Pete from

dzcues.com .

I haven't played in a few months, but used to play every day @ my friend's house. It's nice to play when you need something to do. If you want to watch a good billiard movie watch, Poolhall Junkies. It's a good one. :)

I just watched The Hustler and I've already seen Color of Money (though I may get it again since I've just seen The Hustler). Poolhall Junkies is in my Netflix queue.

The Hustler is a great movie. The Color of Money was good, but not quite as good...

Fairways and Greens.

Yeah, they're both good. You'll like Poolhall Junkies. Christopher Walken is in it. ;)

I love when this topic comes up.

I played serious money pool for years. (about 17 of them) 9-ball, Chicago, and Straight pool were my specialties. Also some One Pocket. If it had not been for a "job" and a "life" I would have gone pro. Maybe I should have. I can turn on ESPN now and see all the people I used to clinic for a few grand a night! Now, I'm a draftsman for a lighting company, and they are competing in $50,000 tourneys. Go figure!

I recently tried to take it up again. Made a few dollars, but it would definately take alot to get my game back. I could do it, and if I ever lose my job it's an option, but it will take a long time.

For those that are serious about playing...stick with it! It's a great game, and if your good enough, rich can come pretty easily.
In my Arsenal.

    • Although the base rules don't make this really clear, the Player must have decided to use Unplayable Ball relief before lifting the ball.  This exact situation is discussed in the Committee Procedures section of the Rules, section 6C(8).  Section 6C addresses how to rule when a Player proceeds under a Rule that does not apply.  Note that 9.4 applies, 9.4 deals with a player moving his ball when no rule allows it.   Rule 9.4 penalizes the Player for lifting his ball when not permitted by the Rules, and requires him to replace it.  Since he dropped and played from a different place, the Wrong Place penalty applies.  As for a serious breach, that would only apply if the Wrong Place gave him a really significant advantage.  Since he could have taken Unplayable Ball relief in essentially the same spot, for just 1 penalty stroke, the Wrong Place penalty of 2 strokes is enough "punishment", there's no need to consider a DQ.
