Hello,

I'm a 16 handicap and I've improved the consistancy of my irons a little but I'm still having to hit WAY more club than last year and the nice fade I had is moving harder right. Now I have to aim quite a bit left on most shots and let it fade hard/almost mini-slice

Last season I would hit probably 9 iron from 150 and this year it's more like 6 or 7 iron. Here is a video of me hitting an 8 Iron. I noticed right off the bat that I'm still too far from the ball. Surprisingly, I don't think I'm even taking a full swing on the course after seeing this on video.

Help??

Your swing looks good. Try to maybe lower your center of gravity a little bit, as you seem slightly off balance. (This may be because you are wearing sandals?). This will help you add power and consistency.

At impact, your hips and shoulders are still square, when they should be slightly open to the target, indicating that they are not pulling the club through impact; rather, you're swinging AT the ball. In addition, I see your head getting kinda pushed around during the backswing. This is because, though your shoulders are hitting your natural limits, you're arms keep going and "lift" up. If I had to guess, it's because you're trying to get a "full turn," but realize that a full turn is different for everyone, and what you're doing is WAY MORE than what is a full turn for you. My advice:

1) A full swing FEELS much LESS full than you may think. Keep your arms and shoulders moving as one. When your shoulders can't rotate any more, your arms shouldn't go any farther, either.

2) "Deaden" the hands for as long as possible during the downswing, and make the shoulder turn THROUGH your main goal, with the hands releasing TO the ball at the last possible second.

My favorite analogy as of late is, imagine the club is a gun and the ball is a bullet. How powerful the ball is hit should be a "surprise" to you. You wouldn't try to shoot a bullet faster by throwing the gun while you pull the trigger. What you need to do, is simply provide the most stable, balanced, focused platform from which to allow your equipment to provide the power/speed.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Looks to me like you have your weight forward on your toes causing you to lose balance. Just slightly more knee bend, like you are going to sit down, may shift the weight more to the balls of your feet. Don't over do it but I think you need a little more bend in the knees.

Agreed on the weight on toes observation. Try a little more knee band and squattier position at set up. But it could have something to do with those golf shoes you are wearing.

Definitely need to work on your balance. You shouldn't be falling over after you hit the ball no matter what's on your feet.

For an iron, you look like you are reaching out a little too much.

    • I saw this video yesterday, couldn't figure out what he meant, then saw this thread and thought "oh maybe someone knows what he was talking about" and you guys are in the same place as me.  I *think* what he's suggesting is that you play a game such that going low is expected. He said there are different variations of it. I think his variation is you get three goes at a shot. You hit your first shot and it's good enough, then you just take it. If it's not good enough then you can abandon that shot and play another. If you still don't like it, you can hit it a third time, but then you're stuck with it. He's good enough that three goes at a shot ought to give him one that's good enough to move on. He did mention his parameters for what counts as "good enough", although I do note that he should have hit a third go on that pitch from the hazard based on that. He holed the putt though so it worked out in the end. I think if you're not as good as he is (which let's face it is everyone here and virtually everyone on the planet), then you'd adjust those rules to make it such that you might manage to make 5 birdies in a row. So maybe you play a two ball scramble with yourself and if you don't like either one then you can abandon those and hit a third or you play a three ball scramble or whatever it is that you need to make your standard work.  At its base though, it's just like going out and playing from the front tees or playing a scramble with yourself. The goal is to gain comfort with making lots of birdies and going way under par, so that when you find yourself in that situation in a real game, you don't panic. It's an interesting variation and if I ever got to play "for fun" at my home course, then I'd definitely try it.
    • Timing yes, feeling maybe not exactly 😉 Weight shift forward can start as early as A3. Weight shift is a lateral sway.

    • That sounds good. And, yeah, the default camera app tries to take in as much light as possible.
