So, some of you may follow my weekly club follies and have a good luagh!
I recently got back into the game after a good 6 years or so off. Best I ever was was mid 90's player, occasionally shooting 90-92.

So this year, back at...started out shooting 120 all the time, one lesson (amazing, and gonna go back as I keep progressing) and I got back down to 100 range easily, stupid mistakes. So I kept trying and trying clubs. As I am now confident with my irons, I wanted something to really tell me if I was hitting good or bad, but not totally kill me on bad shots. I gave into the MP pressure. The MX are a greta club, but I had to go for it.

Now with 3 rounds in, I can say I am in love with the 57's! They just look and feel right. Hit it bad and I know, but at least I know. I've plugged a few pins from my skill, and not blind luck like throwing a dart blindfolded as I always was before. Today I had a bad swing happening and paid the price, but it felt good actually! a shank is shank no matter what

Some people tried to talk me out of it, even the shop owner (to go for something more forgiving), but I am so glad I went with these clubs! I am not looking for irons for a looong time, well maybe a few years if I can keep dwindling the score down..

So for all you guys who are medium to high handicappers, go with your heart and gut...if you love everything about the club of choice, it will likely lead you to an overall playing expereince.

You'll probably be good enough by then if you continue to practice the rest of this summer and fall...it doesn't take that much time to be come a decnet iron player. I've done it in two years.

And another high handicapper joins me with the MP-57 swing improvement clubs. I was a 22-23 or so when I got mine and look at me now! 18.2 trending to 16-something. You made the right choice.

I just had to make sure the guy at the store knew why I was getting Swing Improvement Clubs with R300 shafts. It isn't exactly an order you see everyday.

Your pro wasn't supportive? Mine thought it was a great idea!

I always thought of using the toughest clubs you still can hit the ball with.

MP-57 is just sweet.

PS: Have you seen the new MP-52?

I think you made a great choice. Using "harder" clubs forces you to learn how to it solid and in the right spot. Game improvement clubs do make it easier and still fly the ball well, but it won't really improve your ball striking like a player's club will.

I'm debating on getting the MP-60's myself. Just have to convince the woman that my old ones "don't work anymore" lol

i was easily in the 20's when i switched to the mp60's. after a proper fitting and really going out playing 3 - 4 days a week, I ended last season at a 12.9
if you're comfortable hitting them...and you don't penalize yourself with bad shots a lot, then by all means, swing them!

I agree, this can be key. Most recreational golfers don't want to put a lot of effort into practice, they want to go out and have a good time and that means not struggling with the equipment. So mfgs and retailers have made the forgiving clubs available. But the hard core golf nuts, like most here, are trying to perfect their game and getting the best feedback from the bad shots is an opportunity to learn; so why get mad.

Congrats on those 57s!

Thanks guys. All good thoughts along with my original train of thought. I figure if I'm really gonna do this, I have to keep at it hard the remainder of this year and next to get my game at a decent level. My goal is simply to go out and shoot low-mid 80's consistently and I think by this time next year I will be doing that if I can keep it up. I know I'll never be on the tour or win local championships, but I sure as heck do want to give anyone I play with a good go. All my pals and people I tend to golf with shoot from mid 80's-120, so I can do it!

Now if I can talk my wife into an indoor simulator! We are looking at ne whouses now, so if I can't get near a course, that is going to be in my top 3 objectives for the new digs.

I got mine for the very reason of wanting more feedback from the impact of a ball. With the Nike Slingshots that I replaced, I could hit it straight every time, but I didn't know what was going on with my swing. I wanted more of a players club so that I could get more feedback. I wanted the MP-32's but they are relegated to a special order item. I tried the MP-67's but I couldn't get the nice high ball flight that I liked, so I went with the MP-57's and I don't regret it at all. They are forgiving for a Players iron, but I get the feedback that I need so that I can improve my swing. With these irons I figured out that I was hitting everything off of the toe, I made the needed adjustments, and now I am hitting a nice little draw. I love these irons!

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
