So recently I purchased a Burner '07 3 wood and absolutely love it. This made me want the buy a 5 wood and use it interchangeably with my two iron based on the course. So my question is, when would I use the 5 wood over the two iron and vise versa? I know that Tiger does this and I was just wondering what the thought process behind it is. Thanks!

I'd say 5 wood from a good lie and 2-iron from anywhere else..if you can hit the 2 that is. I'm asuming you can since you're posting this, but you could always go hybrid.

You should be able to get the 5 wood a lot higher into the air, for better or worse. At least this is the case for me. I also find the 5 wood a lot more reliable then a 2 iron.

2-iron?

I just recently took out my 5 iron and only carry as low as a 6 iron and learn to hit my 25 degree hybrid the distances of my 5 and 4 iron.

When you hit your lower irons are you paring the holes or making boogies?

I would hit the more consistent club which in my case is a 5 wood or hybrid club.

I can't even rely on my 3 iron all the time. I use it 2 times at most but I'll use a 2 hybrid 5 or6 times. I use it more than my 3 wood

i2 for precision I say. Some can hit irons better, some woods, that usually settles it for them. Others keep both & change depending on conditions. Windy/calm/steep etc. I pick the i2 any day as I can place the ball in a way I can't with the wood.

I would only use a 5 wood off the tee or if the ball was sitting up saying smack my arse. The rest off the time I would use my 3 iron

The only time Id use the 2-iron is on a really windy day. The 2-iron will give the shot a lower trajectory, so the wind wont effect the shot as much.
Any other time, Id go with the 5-wood. The 5-wood is going to be an easier club to hit and its going make the ball land softer, so you should be able to hit and hold more greens with the 5-wood than you would with the 2-iron.

2r hybrid for best of both worlds? If you like the Burner, you can get it in a hybrid. Works in the fairway or out of the rough. And I think they just dropped the price on them, didn't they?

Do you often hear your balls asking you to smack them??

I like my 19* Titleist 503H. Its waaaay easier to hit than 2-iron and is easier to hit out of a variety of lies than a fairway wood.

On a really wind day a 2 iron for sure as it stays lower - or on really firm and fast running fairways. I binned the 5 wood for a 19 degree rescue - more playable from the tee/fairway/rough/jungle!

    • Day 21 - Good session with driver and 6i. Hitting real golf balls is quite a bit different from the foam balls, still getting used to that change.
    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.

    • Day 249: did a stack putting session and then worked on 5 foot putts for a bit.
