I lived there for 16 years. I was once stationed at Grefrath. I lived in Duesseldorf and Essen. That was before my golf playing days though. I still visit regularly as my son (11) lives in Essen. I would like to know if there are any reasonably priced public courses in the area (NRW).

Hey Oliver. To add to the German experience, after college I went backpacking through Europe and stayed at our friends place in Bergisch Gladbach by Koln (Cologne). Love the "Fruh"

There really arent too many public course around.. However one that is public is in Düsseldorf Hafen am der Lausward 51.. I play there on the reg. however its only a nine hole course but lots of fun and a great price.. If your a member of a club in the states you can visit 99% of the clubs here.. But since I work as a clubfitter for a shop I get on to 5 great course here in the area without a membership anywhere.. And of course if anyone never comes to this area I would be MORE then happy to take to any of those clubs I reg visit.

I may take you up on that offer. I've been wanting to play some golf there. I 've noticed courses in the area but didn't know if they they were private or not. When I flew on approach into DUS over Meerbusch, I notoced players walking a course near A52. Are you familiar with that course??

Ever got the chance to play Gut Laerchenhof ? Site of the Linde German Masters - should be helluva course. According to their website it's possible to play as a guest for 90.00 E (which is rather cheap for a premium course in USA). I'm in Germany at least once a year to visit my parents, who still live in Cologne - maybe next time we can hook up for a round there

Let me start by saying wow! That course is well, wow!! I cant think of anything better to say.. No I have not had the pleasure of playing that course.. to tell you the truth its a little rich for my blood but let me know in advance when your coming and I will plan ahead .. But I would love to meet anyone within a short train ride for a game of golf.. Or come to my side of town and well see what we can play here.. there are a couple that I love starting with Schloss Myllendonk, then there is Rittergut Wildenrath.. Both are top notch courses.. Matter of fact Schloss Myllendonk is a privite club they dont even really sell greenfees unless your with a member.. However I get to play there anytime I want (ofcourse when I pay 50€) which isnt very often.

Back in 1992, right before I left the Military in Grefrath, they were building a course off A44 north of MGB. Do you know which course I'm refering too and what has become of that? Is it private?

On another note, I had emailed the First Tee a few months ago, inquiring about programs in Germany (for my son over there) and they stated that they had no presence in Germany yet. If you have an opportunity in you dealings with local golf organizations, perhaps could you suggest this to some of the local officals and see if they might be interested in initiating such a program. It has shown to be such a success her in the US with young people.

How far north on the autobahn 44?? there are a few I dont know which ones are new thought.. I have only been here for 1.5 years..

I really don't remember the exit. It was the exit to get to Grefrath, before Brueggen/Bracht. It's been so long. I believe it was west of the Autobahn but visable from A44.

I wish I had taken up golf while I still lived in Germany, but I was too busy playing Baseball (Bundesliga). I had one of my pitchers that tried to get me involved but I refused at the time.

I know the feeling.. I wish I started earler.. I started golf only after I had to stop playing hockey.. my knees just wouldnt take it anymore.. then after the 5th surgery on the left knee and the third on the right my doctor told me to think about another hobby.. god I thought the world was ending.. then he suggested golf.. I looked at him like he was crazy I said "hit a little ball then go out and find it?" now look at me 2 years later and I play 3 times a week.. who thought I would have been so crazy.. hahahaa
