I made some minor tweaks and ran the script which re-processes reputation based on a starting value of 10.

a) Post Count Factor: 500 -> 1000
b) Reputation Point Factor: 25 -> 50
c) Daily Reputation Clicks Limit: 5 -> 3
d) Reputation User Spread: 3 -> 9

a) Some users had too much rep power simply because they post frequently. I'd much rather favor quality over quantity in posts.

b) Discourages people repping each other back and forth to give themselves more power.

c) Reputation is supposed to be for exceptional posts (good or bad), and it's unlikely there are more than 3 exceptional posts per day. Use your reputation more judiciously.

d) In addition to using it more judiciously, spread it out more too. Also helps to avoid B.

Oh, and you'll notice that my reputation went from 279 to 189 or something, and my rep power went from 34 or something to 16.

So it wasn't done to my benefit, but because I think it's a fairer setup. My main goal was to make reputation a far "less important" part of using the site while at the same time maintaining some sort of purpose for it. Currently, if you're a 10-rep guy or higher, it doesn't matter if you're a 32 or a 42. Anything 10+ gets you the exact same set of privileges.

Its just a way of rating how good of a poster we all are.

Other forum users can give you positive or negative feedback for you posts. Positive feedback for exceptionally good posts and negative feedback for exceptionally bad posts.

The problem is, what's considered a bad post? Because someone posts an opinion that differs from someone else and that person gives bad rep? Or is it some profanity-laced post? Or is it a post that is off topic? Or is it someone just posting for no apparant reason other than to increase their post count? What exactly is a "BAD" post that would warrant bad rep being given? And can that rep be reversed by the administrators if it's not obvious why bad rep was given?

I ask this because in a thread that has pretty much died out for now I was one of few who was posting against the majority of the rest (about 13% to 87%) and I was wondering if I was going to get bad rep because of that (I was hoping not but on forums, you never know!). I am glad to say that in my case anyway, my disagreements did not acquire me any bad rep. In fact, several people who I disagreed with got good rep from me because they made valid points and didn't back down from their stance. On the other hand, I gave good rep to some of those who had similar ideas to mine who did not back down and go the other way either and stayed true to their belief even though they were in the minority.

I don't know if I have ever seen rep points before on a forum I belong to but I feel there should be a posted standard as to what constitutes good and bad rep because no one wants to be known as a trouble-maker.

I found the thread that discusses this in-depth; if I have any more questions I'll post them later, i suppose, in that thread. In the meantime, disregard some of the previous post!

You shouldnt give someone a bad rep for disagreeing with you, but if you are rude, you should reciever bad rep.

If you feel that someone gave you bad rep and you didnt deserve it, PM Iacas and he will look into it. If you he agrees you didnt deserve bad rep, he will remove it. At the same time, you shouldnt give someone positive rep for agreeing with you or as thanks for giving you positive rep. You should give them positive rep for making great posts, be it for intellectual content or for being really helpful and nice to another member.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
