The golf I've played has been on munis, military courses, and public courses where the dress code is just shirt and shoes. Actually I've seen people play with no shirts at Hara Greens on the west side of Dayton. However, for the most part people observe a dress code even thought it's not formally required. The majority of people wear walking shorts and a shirt with a collar. I very seldom see anyone in jeans or t shirts or other casual clothing.

The thing that I draw from the fact that people are self-imposing a dress code is that the dress codes are good. People that play the game adopt disciplined modes of dress and disciplined modes of behavior.

I hate seeing someone play in jeans. I usually wear polo shirts and my favotite MAINE golf shorts, that, or a number of other shorts and pants that aren't jeans.

It's hot here and I sweat, so I prefer to keep specific clothes for golf. Meaning, I never uses these specific polo shirts for anything but golf, I do not wear them anywhere else, even after being washed.

I have a buddy who thinks he's cool wearing jeans and an aviator eyeglasses to the course. Looks like a jackass, but then again he's the most unserious golfer you could ever see; never counts score, never respects etiquette, talks while I am teeing, etc..
My achievements:
Eagles: 0
Birdies: 18
Best Round: 89

I don't see HOW people play in jeans (at least in warm weather.) I don't even wear jeans when hitting in the net in my back yard. Too uncomfortable, too tight, too hot, and not enough give.

Have you considered say "Dude, you look like a dork dressed like that."

Seems to me like a lesson in the pitfalls of blindly clinging to an arbitrary rule...

Yes, that's the way I saw it and how I argued my case. I suppose they bought it in the end. As in so many things, discretion should be exercised.

punk (pants almost down to knees)

Do you mean shorts? So shorts that begin to approach the knee joint automatically indicate a slob? Wow.

I generally dress in standard golf attire except for the bottom end courses. The better the course, the better I would try to look.

I don't judge people based on what they're wearing. If the course has a code then it must be followed. But no one has a responsibility to wear clothing I wouldn't find offensive.

I can only take care of myself. I usually wear shorts and an untucked golf-ish shirt of some type.

I like a collar because I can put it up in the back if the sun is coming down hard and I don't have sunscreen.

Treat golf courses like restaurants. The little, cheap local course is like Denny's. The nicer courses that cost real scratch to play are like fancier restaurants. Dress accordingly.

LOL. Thanks for starting my work week with a belly laugh. Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to.

Here's a caption: "But officer Sir, I was speeding only so as not to miss my tee time. I've got a set of Mizunos in the trunk to prove it." "Alright then young man, move along now ....." p.s. to me, "pants" is a generic term, applying equally to short or long. I was talking about the belt line.

I don't judge people based on what they're wearing.

Unless they are wearing their pants low and their underwear is showing (as in the above picture of the guy with the cop.) As soon as I see it I think: punk, crook, trouble.

I told my daughter that I didn't care if a guy had staight A's, never been in trouble, she met him at church, and he was studying to be a pastor, if she ever brought home a guy wearing his pants like that I'd shoot him on the spot. Better to nip trouble off early, and guys that wear their pants like that are trouble.

Typically, serial killers / rapist end up being those nice clean cut guys. I hope she doesn't end up with one of them.

I understand that's a pet peeve of yours but really, it's just a fashion thing. Kids being kids and kids tend to enjoy plenty of ridiculous fads. Obviously the kind of people you want your daughter around is your business and I'm not going to tell you what's good and bad. But I wouldn't judge someone based on stupid pants. I mean, I'd call them an idiot and let them know they like stupid, but I wouldn't judge them as a person. If that makes sense, lol.

Yeah, the guys who are a little too clean...a little too perfect. Got to be careful around them!

I wouldn't know about those types, but I'd bet there's a strong association (p People who wear their shirts outside their pants I'm not so sure about. I've done it myself on occasion you see ....

I'm about 64 pages late on this and haven't read the cargo shorts thread so I don't know what's going on over there.

I'm in the minority because I said it hurts the game, when in reality I think is has no bearing on the game. I had this discussion with my wife just the other day, it is something that just bugs the heck out of me...

Is golf an elitist sport? If you are so shallow to judge a person on what they wear, then you are certainly a prejudiced elitist.

The only shorts that I own and pretty much wear every day are cargo shorts. I also wear a T-shirt to work everyday that has some sort of logo or saying on it (like my Dunder Mifflin Paper Company one today). My clothes are clean, stain free, unoffensive with the words or images on them. Why should it matter that my shirt does not have a collar and my shorts have a lot of pockets, especially on the driving range? I actually had a comment about a harmless t-shirt that I was wearing from the starter when I was just going to the range, something like I was lucky he was going to "let me get away with it this time". My boss (worth millions I imagine) wears plenty of shirts with some sort of r-rated word, image or saying on them all the time. When he pulls up in his Aston Martin you'd probably think he was the mechanic.

The point is, why judge a person on their appearance and not their character and actions.. Does this sound familiar?

True, but looking smart and respectable is just part of the game. It doesn't cost a lot to put on a collared shirt and a pair of chinos. Golf is not an elitist sport, but we should all respect the boundaries of common ground that we have in the game relating to dress code and behaviour. It's a good idea, because at a private or public course, people will not want to become members if the values that make it a rarified and pleasant place are discarded. I wouldn't want to play at a fee paying club where people can wear jeans and a mucky tee shirt on the course. What about tattoos on the arm?...some clubs are quite relaxed about this, but if you went to play at a very exclusive club you might not be allowed to play.....anyone had an experience of this? (i don't have any tatts so I don't need to worry).

The reason I think it has no bearing on the game is that the score at the end of the round has nothing to do with what you are wearing, you can be an idiot that dresses like a slob or be an idiot in a tux.

It's not the clothes, it's the person.

I could care less if someone wears jeans and a t-shirt on the course. In what way does that affect how I'm going to swing the golf club? Does it create an imbalance in the earth's gravity where it will cause me to mis-read a putt? No, it's simply stupid rules made up years ago by some rich snobs that were/are used as a reason not to let "peasants" play on their course.

I understand what you re saying but to look smart, ie to wear a collared shirt and a pair of chinos, is not a snobbish requirement. Anyway, it's up to you, if you don't wear this you won't get to play at the better courses.
