Hi all,

Im thinking of getting new wedges and would like some opinions. I can only really afford 2, and given my current HDCP I dont think 3 would offer me any massive improvement. Hence, I am looking for a 52 and 58. Sound alright?

The clubs Im currently interested in are the Mizuno MP T series, Cleveland CG12, Taylormade Z Tp and Titleist Vokeys. Anyone use any of these and can recommend them?

Also, Im looking to use the 58 as a sand wedge, but Im finding it hard to find places offering them with more than 10 degrees of bounce. Should this be enough? The sand in my area is fairly light.

Thanks,
James

I use the MP T series and I'm partial to those. But the ones you list are all good wedges, so I'm not going to suggest against the others. I used to use Vokeys, and I prefer the MP Ts (otherwise I would use the Vokeys) of the two. But you aren't going

wrong with any of them. Until my handicap was in the low 20s, I used 46-52-58 (I also owned a 56 that I used occasionally). It worked just fine for me. Your PW is MX-15, so I'm guessing it's around 46 degrees (MX-19 is 46, -15 isn't listed on Mizuno's site). As for the sand, I use my 51° with 6 degrees of bounce out of sand of all types (light, packed, etc) more often than I use my 56 (with 14 degrees of bounce) out of the sand. While more bounce will help out of the sand in general, utilizing the bounce is about as important. If you're already decent out of the sand, then you're very likely utilizing the bounce in your existing wedges, so it's fine.

The 52 and 58 seems right for your needs. I think you are on the right track. I carry the Vokeys and would highly recomend them. They are cast, offering a bit more feedback than forged, but with the tradeoff of a slightly harsher feel. I've never tried the CG12 wedges but I carry the CG2 irons made from the same CMM material. These are the softed cast irons I've ever hit, and I love the feedback and feel.

The Vokey spin milled 58 comes in a 12 degree bounce. If you want a spin milled 52 you'll have to buy a 54.10 and bend it 2 degrees strong. I think a lot of people do this. I opted to just buy the 200 series for my 50* gap wedge and it matches well with the spin mills at adresss. Maybe go this route if your not obsesed with a complete matching wedge set. If you are maybe go with an all 200 series, IF you were interested in Vokeys. Good Luck.

I love my Vokeys. They just work so well.
Personally, I like having 3 wedges. I like having a 52*, 56* and a 60* because it gives you more options as far as what kinds of shots you can hit around the green. It allows you to fine-tune your distances a lot better.
Id much rathar have no hybrids and 3 wedges than to have 1 or 2 hybrids and only 1 or 2 wedges. I find the wedges to be more useful than the hybrids. On longer shots, as long as you are in the ballpark you are OK, but in your shortgame is so critical that you be as close as possible and I feel that more wedges give me a better chance of doing that.
You should also consider Mizuno wedges. Some would say that they are just as good as Vokeys and maybe just a little bit better.

I play the Mizuno MP series wedges and love them. my 56 degree has 11 degree of bounce and I open the club face out of the sand. My 52 degree has 7 degree of bounce and my 60 degree has 6 degree of bounce.

The above site has a great article regarding wedges and their bounce from Sandtrap, our website.

When buying also remember what distance you need to fill in, especially if you are limiting your purchase to 2 wedges.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeh, the PW in my set is 47. I'm fairly good out of the sand, but that could be because of the size of my current SW, its massive.

The only thing I worry about getting new wedges is the forgiveness aspect. I know they are a precision tool, but I want to be confident of hitting them well.

Yep, thats what I was thinking of doing. I don't think the lower amount of spin would make too much difference.

Oh, and anyone know whats up with the odd degrees on Mizuno wedges. Eg Odd numbers instead of even, is it to make them easier to modify?

My guess is Mizuno makes the odd degrees to sit in with their iron sets. It seems most of their irons, in the MP line anyway, goes 39,43,47. I suppose they want to keep the 4 degree gap with 51 and 55 and such. Or if you were going 6 with degree gaps you would still need odd lofts. Just a guess.

Just thought of another question. Is it worth getting the fitted or not? The rest of my current set isn't fitted, as my swing is changing fairly constantly while I'm improving.

i would go with the vokey wedges however i would get the 52* and 56* ... reason being you can open the 56* blade to play a higher loft if you need it, IMO those 2 lofts will be your best bet

Well, Im far from being a highly-skilled player and I dont have any problems hitting my Vokeys, so I think you will be fine.

Just take a little time to practice with them so that you have confidence in hitting them.

I would definitely recommend the taylormade z tp. plenty of stopping powers and a versatile enough grind and shape. Definitely more/better feel than the vokeys for me. I would definitely consider the cg14 over the cg12 and I wouldn't discount the callaway x-forged from your list either.

Here's the kicker: you don't actually need as much visible forgiveness because the loft will take care of that. I know that sounds weird, but the sets you describe are actually sufficiently forgiving.

Oh, and anyone know whats up with the odd degrees on Mizuno wedges. Eg Odd numbers instead of even, is it to make them easier to modify?

I think it's odd to fit in with the sets, as others have said. The 47 degree wedge I have now has the same bounce that the PW from the -57 set has.

Just thought of another question. Is it worth getting the fitted or not? The rest of my current set isn't fitted, as my swing is changing fairly constantly while I'm improving.

Depends. I'm generally of the opinion that it's always worth getting fitted. Mizuno does it for free - check their website for demo/fitting days in your area. I don't know about the other companies, but I'd be surprised if they didn't have fitting days available.

What if there aren't any fitting days near you. I have shorter than average arm length so I think I would benefit from a fitting.

im pretty new so ive been more looking for cheaper wedges to finish out my bundle set. I found some golden bear 3 pack at dicks sporting goods online, but not sure how good they are. They dont seem to be on hardly any of the sites ive been going though (proly too cheap a brand) i thought maybe it would be a good start just to finish my set and have something as i cant really afford to get 2 wedges at 80 bucks a piece right now.

heres the set i was looking at.
Golden Bear M 86 Wedge Package

i guess most of you would recommend something better as far as brand goes. I just didnt want to pay 80-100 bucks per wedge if i could avoid it.
