Wow, we had a baby almost a month ago and my golf game has gone down the drain because of it. I'm basically on lock-down. Not to mention i get about 4 hrs a sleep max each day. I love my baby, but man I think my index will go up 5 points because of it.

I've a daughter who is almost 18 months. She was born in February, so I didn't really have the opportunity to golf when she was a newborn anyway, but I do remember what those looooooong days and nights of no sleep were like.

I must say, though, all that hard work and sleep deprivation is well worth it.

I agree here. But, I assume he's only goofing around...at least I hope so!

I have a 6 week old daughterwhich comes before everything. JUst pick your rounds as you can...enjoy all facets of life bro. I think if all is well in life, then even with less golf, your mental game will certainly be much better. It did for me.

I love my son...but once they turn into teenagers then all bets are off.

Anyway, to the OP, congrats on your new bundle of joy.

Congratulations -- terrific news!! That's the best thing that will happen in your life, so cherish every one of these special moments.

I played 18 on Monday with a buddy who became a father for the first time only a week earlier. So it is possible!! Maybe just not as often in the first year ...

But more importantly -- enjoy fatherhood!!

Congrats, and don't feel bad at all. My first daughter was born Sunday morning. I can't think of anything else but her, except (I must admit) a little bit I think of golf. I'm not sure how it will fit in, but I hope to get her involved as a spectator in my playing as she grows older; and in the meantime, I expect I'll be repairing a lot of divots in the backyard and wearing out my putting carpet in the basement!

Congrats to the OP - life will never be the same. Been there done that; my last newborn turned 19 last month and the trials and tribulations continue.

Congrats to the OP (and the rest of the new fathers). My daughter turns one next week and while it does affect your golf life, it's worth it. You tend to appreciate the times you do get out to play a bit more.

Congrats to all! Your golf game does take a hit, but it is well worth it. This is my first year back playing after a year layoff with my soon to be 2 year old son. I expect another year layoff once my second comes later this month. I have about 2 weeks left to reach my goal of breaking 85, which I havent done since 2005. I guess I will be trying to reach this goal again in 2010.

I took over a year off from the time my wife was seven months pregnant till the baby was 11 months old. I think it has helped my golf game so much. It has helped me put everything into perspective. My family comes first for me, then my education, and golf is somewhere further down the list. I play the game more with my mind now then before. I do have some new irons and wedges that have helped me with my swing, but the fact that I play the game smarter now, don't get angry on the course, and just relax and enjoy the few hours of quiet time, has helped tremendously.

My 13 month old daughter actually helps me with my putting. I will putt around in the living room and she will chase the balls around and carry them off to hide them. She has a blast with it, and it is some good practice for me.

For years I played to a 14 to 18 handicap, and now it is down in the single digits. God bless the little children!

Gentlemen! Lend me your ears!!! I too had a baby boy exactly 5 weeks ago (picture attached...that's me telling him i'm going to play a round and thats him smirkin tellin me "Right On!"). I am here to proclaim that your golf game doesnt have to suffer. I still have gotten to the range 2 times a week and have played 3 rounds since his birth (with 2 more coming this weekend on a trip to michigan this weekend). How do you ask do I pull this off? Simple...

1.) Marry a woman who's very understanding
2.) Marry a woman who likes playing golf
3.) Marry a woman who will meet you at the range with baby in tow, who sleeps alot, while each of you takes 10 swings per turn
4.) Be around friends who are married who you're wife is close to that she can go and spend "women" time while you get your "man" time

If those fail, then follow the beer commerical and tell her you need to "vent" or be with a friend who needs to vent...all 18 holes worth of venting.

Here's the funny thing...she wants me to play because (1) she thinks I work too hard and has no problem with me playing when i want, (2) she feels i balance my time with work, home, and my activities (working out, golf) well, and (3) she wants me to teach the youngin the game when he gets older, and in order for me to teach him, i have to play myself.

He's my lil dude tho. I'd give up anything in a heartbeat for him.

So basically...when it comes down to it, i got frikin lucky!!!

I have a one year-old boy. It will sound like I'm an awful person probably, but I played more golf in the last year than ever before. Probably an average of 27 holes per week. This summer I've probably been playing 45 holes per week.

I love my wife. I manage to spend plenty of time with the kids and cook at least 4 meals a week as well. This summer I've been getting up @5am and teeing off @6 for a quick 9 before work.

Here's my little guy the day he was born:

My kids are 13 year and 7 years old and when they were just born, I remember lack of sleep, diapers changes and feedings.

Your golf game will suffer but you will be rewarded with the opportunity to play golf with the kids.

The best advise I can give you is to read to your kids as early as possible and as often and as long as possible, my son thinks very fast and is very smart all because of ready to him so early.

Enjoy and treasure your kids.

Tiger started got interested in golf when he was 6 months old, tell your wife its important to practice golf in front of your son so that he is interested at an early age. I know of kids who at 5 years old are skilled golfers.

Congrats on the newborn. I took a few years off after my kids were born. Just trying to get back into again. It's worth taking the time off from the game if that's what it takes to spend time with your kids.

I'm hoping to start playing again after a LOONG layoff. (only played 3 rounds since 2005)

Having 3 girls in 3 years will do that to you.

Just got new grips on the clubs today, new putter last week... Daddy who? :)

    • So no joke, last evening post work nine must have been the craziest side I've ever played: Bogey, double, double, par, birdie, birdie, birdie, double, birdie. Two gimme birdies, one 15 footer and one bonus bomb from prolly 35 feet on no. 9. Full disclosure, it's a super easy course when greens are running at an 8 with easy welcoming pins. Still, a couple of firsts there. Driver freed me up starting the fourth hole. Anyway, driver notes: 1) anti left left hand grip. 2) no structural bind on hands/grip. 3) left shoulder HAS to get up to chin with humerus completely detached from chest and shoulder socket (feel) Big game tomorrow, aiming to break 80.
