I am currently in the market for a new set of irons and have narrowed it down to 2, Taylormade r7 tp or titleist ap2. as far as the stats the computers at the PGA superstore says that the Taylormade's are slightly better. Any help would be greatly appreciated

What stats would those be?

I've never hit either, I'd love to though. Most people I talk to like the AP2's more.

I'm going to tell you to go for the Taylor Made's because that's pretty much all that's in my bag, but the truth is, you need to try them both and feel the both of them out. If a store knows you're going to buy clubs, then they'll let you hit away with the clubs as long as you want till you figure it out for yourself. That's what i did, and i'm happy i did...

I came from using TaylorMade irons (now the AP1) and I'll tell you why I didn't buy another set of TaylorMades: hated the design of the R7 (not sure if the TP is the same) for one reason. The "channel" on the back of the club. I've said this before in another thread awhile back, but on the back of the club (where the R7 emblem is) there's a very, very narrow groove back there. Being a guy who keeps his stuff nice, cleans his clubs after every round, that channel is so darned narrow....no way you could get a brush, towel, Q-tip or anything else in there. Now I play a lot in the mornings when the freshly cut grass is still wet with dew. Many times there's blades of grass than ended up on the back of my old RAC's. No problem then...come home, give them a bath, dry them off. Can't do it with the new design. If you bath them, can't dry them completely. That would absolutely drive me nuts.

But honestly, that's the only reason I don't like the R7. Had many TaylorMade clubs before (and still have..see my sig) and they make darned good equipment. Maybe I'm just too anal or something.

I haven't hit the r7 TP, only the normal r7's. I'm in love with my AP2's, they feel awesome.

The Taylormade R7 TP's are alot easier club to hit. Titleist is basically a players club very very hard to hit right on the sweet spot. taylormades on the other hand came out with the tp to give the forgiveness and easy to hit club that taylormades usually come with but has the slim looks of a titleist or mizuno! i personally would go with the taylormades mainly because they feel very solid and give alot of forgiveness for being a forged club. but the best thing to do is go down to your local golf shop and try both of them for yourself. Taylormade taylors to a mid to higher handicapped golf and titleist taylors to the low handicapped player. And that is the reason titleist started making cobra, so they can cater to a mid to high handicapped person. Hope this helps!!!

Excuse me, but the TaylorMade R7 TP is not a forged iron. It is most certainly a cast iron.

The launch angle, spin rate, and the dispersion pattern was slightly tighter.[with the TMR7TP]

As far as I'm concerned, you should have made your decision based on that comment above. In my opinion the two clubs are equally good looking, so asthetics wouldn't be a problem. But if you like the AP2's better, you need to ask yourself this; Is the difference in performance small enough that asthetics can make up for it. If you're still stuck, look at the price tag!

Whoops , error my bad... my opinion still stands tho. the r7 tp is a more foregiving club and more reliable under pressure!!!

If you are going for the R7 tp's, you might want to wait. THey are being replaced in early 2009 by the "Taylormade Tour Preferred" irons.

My vote does go for the r7 tp however.

Titleist did not start to make Cobra. Cobra and Titleist were separate companies, and Achushnet bought both. They are owned by the same company, one did not start the other.

r7 TP vs AP2?

Ugh. I couldn't get the r7 TPs out of the bag fast enough. I have MP-67s that have sat unused in my basement since I've put the AP2 in the lineup.

The AP2 have all the forgiveness of the r7 TPs and a helluva lot more feel.

tried them both...both are great clubs......i felt the ap2 did have a little more feel to them and shots on the sweet spot came off a little hotter...maybe 5 more yards per club..and they are relatively forgiving.

i found though that he r7 tp's are a little more forgiving than the ap2's were. I'd say i'd catch maybe 8/10 solid on the sweet spot with both irons...but those 2 shots on the ap2 maybe lost almost a clubs worth of distance while the r7's maybe lost half a club.

Either way i'd say they are both great...its a real coin toss...i personally preferred the look of the taylormades...and my woods are taylormade as well....and the irons came with a taylormade bag...so thats what did it or me...nonetheless...you are at least choosing between two very nice iron sets.

i'd suggest demo-ing like a 6iron of each and going from there.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
