Pros and Cons to Forged Blades

I asked a question recently about Miura Irons, but i had a few questions about blades in general. I feel like that i could handle blades, since my ball striking is good and my scores are going down. What are some of the good things about blades, and what ares some of the bad things about blades. My i10s have been great, im just making sure theres no supreme advantage to having blades and being able to hit them than having cavity backs. Any info is appreciated.

If your scores are going down, and you've been playing good with your i10's, why switch?...I'd wait a little more. i10's are nice clubs and not really old. I don't think you should get new clubs yet.

i just got blades a couple weeks ago and the clubs dont really help they just teach you that you have to make center contact every time and if you dont they will pucnish you by distance and direction loss.

Blades will be able to work the ball better and have a wonderful feel when you hit the sweet spot. However you will be severely punished when you mis-hit them. I am thinking of getting an old set of blades just to use from time to time on the range. I don't know if I have the confidence to actually play them, though. I would say go ahead and get a set. Keep your old irons in case the blades are just too much.

I agree with cg031, why change when you are achieving your aim with what you have. Many tour pros don't even play blades so its not like you are at a disadvantage by playing with cavity backs.

You could also mix and match - perhaps keep some cavity backs for your long irons and insert blades for your mid and short irons....see how that turns out.

The only cons with blades are thier forgiveness, if you miss hit then you are screwed. However if you strike the ball clean you get a much more workable shot, and it feels amazing. I have also found that I get more distance out of a properly struck blade then I did with a properly struck cavity back. There was also a test done with a machine and blades are much more accurate also.

Maybe try borrowing a set of older used blades from a course or a local store, and see how they work out for you on the range.

Try hitting blades you are considering at the driving range and compare them with your irons and see what you think.

I bought mine without hitting them because of the price and 1 1/2 years later, I play 6-PW blades. The mp33 have a nice balance and just feel better than any irons that I have hit, I have lowered my handicap including shooting under par 3 times.

A blade long iron is very hard to hit. I think as your game improves I would look at the Titleist Z-Blend irons. The long Irons are a cavity back and short irons are blades.

With blades you'll hunt pins but with cavity back ( training wheels) clubs you'll hunt greens. A graduated set offers the blade at the 7-w end and more forgiving at the other end. If your opponent can pure a blade 3 iron ask for a lot of strokes because you're going to need them.

i have a blade 3 iron that i keep in my bag it is actually not that hard to hit, your ball flight will be low but it actually my go to club for 180 to 210 yards

I think that the CB irons that gets nearest to a good blade are the Titleist AP2.

Pros- More workability

Cons- Less forgiving. Only get those if you are a consistent ball stricker.

I'm the same hc as you and I prefer a combo set. I like my long irons to be cb's and at 7 and espeically 8 I want accuracy and control so thats where I switch to blades. The advantages have already been posted. Yes you have to stike the ball better and that comes. I don't think the distance loss is that great. The biggest thing that I noticed was it took awhile to learn how to hit the ball. You will learn, as I did, that a nice full easy swing has much better results that just trying to rip it. I also have 2 set of old irons I play. One set is 1-pw and I now look forward to hitting the 1i. If you have absolutely no athletic ability and zero right to left ratio, don't get blades, IMO. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
