People lie about driving distance more than holes in one because it's at least somehow related to your ability. Being able to drive the ball further implies, on the surface, greater skill.

Skill for most, Only luck for a select few IMO on the hole in one topic.

I love the haters.

Haters? Just because you hit 3 drives over 300 with firm conditions and a wind at your back doesn't mean you can hit it 300 consistently, I mean EVERYONE can hit it 300+ but only under certain conditions. Also were the tees playing up from where they originally measured the hole from?

This just validates what I said in my last post, just because people hit it a few times in conditions that promoted the drive, they think they can do it that majority of the time. People look at the situation and such before you claim these drives.

I'm more impressed with the guys that hit it about 300 down there, but also 300 to the side. Using some basic trig that suggests the distance they hit it is about 425!

If you hit it 300 you should be scratch or below, so if your off 15 stop showing off about big drives cos' it simply tells me how sh*t the rest of your game is, imho.

If driving distance is the most fudged golf accomplishment than Handicap surely comes in at #2. Problem is it's often pretty tough to determine whether it's deliberate or unintentional and sometimes it's not apparent. You have your sandbaggers, vanity 'cappers, those that don't know or don't quite play by the rules, those that play only one course and know every gopher hole by name on it etc. People can brag about far they can hit but it's very easy to see if they are or aren't telling tall tales by their swing.

here's a question for you guys. let's say there's a golfer with a low handicap index of 2 or 3. now, this guy really does hit 300 yards drives, straight.

ok, now, all of a sudden for reason this same golfer can only drive 250-260,maximum,straight. where would would his handicap level out to?

In the first place a 2 or 3 HDCP could not hit 300 yard drives (see a couple posts before yours) because you have to be a scratch golfer to do that.

I won't say that I hit my drives straight all the time, but I do hit them long (sometimes a long way OB). But I can probably count on one hand the number of "I hit my drives 300 yards" guys that have rolled it past 275 when I was paired with them. I really think that guys think if they caught it really well and they swung hard, it must have gone 300. Not happening. I play a lot of tournament golf, and probably only 20% of my competitors hit it 300+ and there is no way a 15+ handicap will hit it 300 without some cart path involvement.

At the moment, I'm a 17 handicap since I've been away for a while. I have measured 3 300yard drives, with out cart path or help. This is only counting the ones that are playable. Now, this is 3 out of how many attempts? I can't count. But there are 3 holes on my local course that are long and strait (500yards+). If I feel I'm hitting good that day, I will attempt it. Rest of the time I'm hitting it 270 and a few higher (below 300) and playable. But average 300 yards...no way in hell...

If you hit it 300 you should be scratch or below, so if your off 15 stop showing off about big drives cos' it simply tells me how sh*t the rest of your game is, imho.

My game is sh*t, thanks.... It's actually my Drives that are sh*tiest. I don't always try to hit as far as I can in an attempt to keep it on the fairway or playable. That doesn't always work either...lol It seems I'm always recovering from my drives, whether it's a drop or in the ruff/bushes/trees. In the end, I play for fun. Not to pad my handicap for the glory.

For me, the most lied about accomplishment is Score . I've golfed with guys that I know had a double bogey's while they said they had a bogey or even a par instead of a bogey. I just have to laugh. It's only hurting them selves and doesn't bother me either way. Even if they beat me by 1-3 stokes. I still have fun playing this game!

Actually if you re read my post, that's not what I said, and its pretty clear that's not what I said.

At least someone got the point of my comment, it was not a dig at anyone, just a general opinion of mine, I also agree that people should just have fun at this game, it should not be about showing off etc

I've seen enough poor golfers to realize that a 300 yard drive is no longer a remarkable feat. First, look at the equipment. The combination of some driver heads and shafts will maximize distance while controlling spin rate. Two, some guys don't care about being able to do other things besides drive the ball. How many times have you seen a guy bang out driver after driver at the range? You spend all that time practicing that you're liable to start hitting the ball 300 yards. However, that is not an indication of how good a golfer you are. You can have one great skill set and be poor at everything else. Just last week, I played a round of golf with someone who had 3, 300 yard drives including one that was 354 yards. It was ridiculous. However, on that drive, he bogeyed the hole. He also had three triples and one four putt.

Hitting a drive 300 yards and averaging 300 yards are two different things. I always doubt a guy who averages 300 yards. However, someone banging out one or two per round? Absolutely believe it.

That post sums up the issue absolutely perfectly.

There are some pros that hardly ever hit one over 280, and there are some really average golfers who can bomb from the tee and that's literally all they can do. Technology has opened up the 300-yard drive -- at least on occasion -- to more people than had ever dreamed it possible before. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your position), technology has not done the same for consistent domination (or even competency) in many of the other areas of the game. Jess

I drove the ball - 400 - yards, bouncing down the cart path the whole way

I was asked:
"What is your handicap?"
I replied:
"Golfing is my handicap!"

But if you're talking about guys who

I agree. To add to your comments I doubt that there'd be more than 5 to 10 people on this message board who'd hit it past

me all day long and I don't average anywhere near 300 yards.

I'd have to go with "Handicap" as the most fudged statistic in golf and it goes both ways with some fudged too high and some fudged too low.

I think most people are honest but thier perception can get distorted when it comes to how long they hit it. There are players that can get it out there consistantly near or around 300 yds. They're usually lower handicap players with good swings and good athletic strength/flexibility.

My handicap of 31 is estimated from my usual scores of between 100 and 105 for 18. I don't know my actual handicap, but I think those scores are representative of how good I am overall at the game of golf.

However, I can hit the ball 300 yards, and I'm not lying.

I don't do it very often, and if you averaged just the shots I connect with well that average is still probably only about 270, but I swing that driver really hard, and sometimes the ball stops past 300 yards.

I don't hit many fairways at all (maybe 15-20%), although I do hit the first cut about twice as often as I hit the fairway.

And overall, I don't play the game well. Unless I have a putter in my hand, it's not about getting the ball close to the hole, it's about getting the ball on the green at all. If I have a wedge 20 yds from the front of the green, the ball's going to end up behind the green an embarrassing percentage of the time. If I have a mid iron to the green, the ball's going to end up about 20 yds from where it started an embarrassing percentage of the time. I have no business turning in good scores or attaining a low handicap with my current skill set.

But I can hit the ball 300 yds on occasion.

JB Holmes had the CARRY DISTANCE of one of his drives measured at 317 yards last week

Equipment - clubs and balls, and the advances in teaching and training etc... certainly have made it easier to hit the ball farther...

But I agree, just about everyone exaggerates how far they hit the ball...
