If you were on the 18th and you needed a birdie to get a great score, and perhaps win the competition, you'd hit the shot, believe me. As for social golf - do whatever you like, just don't claim a score you didn't have. (And by "you" I don't mean you personally.)

But I do believe in 1950 the rule was stated that any player may call any ball unplayable anywhere on the course and the penalty is 1 stroke.

Not a chance would I do that. Ill take relief and move on...Its just a game, and I am not willing to ruin my clubs over it.

You're taking free drops from rocks and roots while establishing a .09 handicap???

Why the "but"? We're talking about people who take relief but don't take the 1 stroke penalty.

How about the both of you leave each other alone and put each other on your ignore lists. For the last time, you got off on the wrong foot with each other, and until you can learn to forget it, stop.

How do you play a lost ball,...?

I think you need to hit more provisionals! Also, if you *do* play an OB as a lateral hazard, shouldn't you take a 2 stroke penalty to make up for the 'free' distance?

That will teach me to post a quick reply when I am a newbie on a message board!

If there is any doubt about a lost ball, OB, etc I hit a provisional. If the course was empty I would always chose to drive back to the tee, but I play public courses and the few times I tried driving back to the tee I almost had my head handed to me! I have had to accept that it is just not possible to go back to the tee during weekend play. Of course it depends on the match. If I lost a ball in a match play (my Sunday match) I concede the hole. If I lose a ball in a stroke play match and I can not drive back to the original spot (usually possible from any spot but the tee) I will simply post the hole as my maximum ESC. I may be wrong, but I think it is possible to still count a round posting your maximum score for handicap purposes.

The game may be the more important thing in general, but there can be specific instances when you might want to take a penalty stroke rather than damage your equipment. That doesn't mean you don't respect the game. Taking the penalty *is* respecting the game. If you are suggesting people don't avail themselves of all the rules of golf then I think perhaps "the game" we are talking about might not be the same game for each of us.

Sorry mate I didn't read your post correctly. I missed that you were taking your penalty for the unplayable, that's 110% acceptable admirable and correct for me and is totally in the spirit of the game. I have done so lots of times myself not for fear of damaging a club but for avoidance of injury purposes such as tree roots and that kind of thing.

I have seen people snap a wrist from roots. I will always take the stroke and drop than risk the injury or the damage to my clubs.

Damage to the club is not the same as damage to the wrist. It's a bit disingenuous to throw the "wrist injury" thing in now - everyone's been talking about chipping a club a little or something.

And I think people got the impression from your earlier posts that you didn't take the penalty stroke.

I'm sorry, but isn't this a discussion board,... I ask you, what does take "relief" mean,...? I don't know for sure but I think in golf terminology "relief" means a free drop, that's why I said what I did and with no personal attack attached, he's on my thread, his prophile boasts his .09 handicap and then he's talking about taking free drops,... no wonder he's a .09

Yeah, so? Doesn't mean you have to respond to someone who's already been in a spat with you. Drop it.

It's a 0.9, and for the last time, drop whatever problem you have with him. He shall do the same.

I spoke in the previous post as well about not wanting to get an injury.

Cheers and no worries :)

I have a friend who kicks, fluffs, and awards himself impossible gimmies. He asks me "are you gonna let me do this?" I always say, "Do what you want to - you're making up your own game with your own rules. If you want to ask me how to play GOLF with the same equipment, feel free anytime..."

Relief in golf does not mean a free drop. In many rules in the rule book for the procedure it will say something along the lines of "you may take relief, with the penalty of X amount of strokes."

Relief just means that you can move away from what ever is making it hard for you to swing, sometimes without penalty, and sometimes with penalty.

Well, unless there is a local rule in effect for some strange act of god (snow, flooding etc) I don't know anyone that takes a clean and place or fluffs or whatever you call it. It's just not done in New Zealand money or no money.

If you take a place because you risk injury and not taking the penalty then when your ball hits a tree and ends up in the fairway throw the ball back into the trees.

The rules of golf are there for a reason and if you don't wanna follow em don't play the game make up your own one, just don't disgrace the real golfers by calling it golf.

Yes it is, you may not do it or you may not know people who admit they do it, but it is done. Everywhere. Even New Zealand.

Please cite the rule(s) that use the term 'relief' in a penalty situation.

Thank you.

For one, rule 26-1 is called "Relief for Ball in Water Hazard". So how about that? It's also listed under the general section "Relief Situations and Procedure."

P.S. 26-2 is "Ball Played Within Water Hazard."

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
