Since I am a high handicapper I have struggled on the Tee box and have used exclussively my 3 wood. Last week I have decided to start using a driver. I have a Titlest 983K that my brother had gave me. I have really made ajustments in my swing and am coming along well in hitting the driver. I have loosened my grip, slowed my backswing, adjusted my grip, and am keeping my left arm straighter and keeping my right elbow in. I mentioned to a fellow player who has helped me a lot that at the top of my backswing I make a kind of a figure 8 motion when I start my forward swing. He said "as long as you hit it good that is what matters."

He said it like that is not they way I should be doing. He did say also that Jim Furyk does that. Anyway is that terrible or not text book. What are the disadvantages in doing this. Thanks

Fred Couples also has a loop and hits a monster ball, I think what is important is that the club drops back into the correct plane after the movement at the top of your swing.

The biggest disadvantage is that if you don't have your timing and everything perfect then your ball will do things that you don't want it to do. But if you are like Jim Furyk and can control it then there is nothing wrong. Just remember there are any pictures on the scorecard, just numbers.

Here's what I play:
