Tips on drills to practice hitting down on the ball?

Long-time follower of the forum, first time poster/replier.  Really been struggling with compression.  I feel like whenever I focus on hitting down on the ball and compressing it, I tend to either top it or hit behind the ball, into the ground.  For example, drills like the towel drill, I feel like they just cause me to hit into the ground behind the ball.  No idea what I'm doing wrong.  Ideas???

I think your problem is you are trying TOO hard to hit down on the ball. Change your focus by trying to move the low point of your swing further forward. There is a great video circulating by TrackMan Maestro where he explains this in detail. One concept I came away with is that EVERYONE hits down on the ball because the ball is on the ground and we have to raise the club above our heads. Makes sense right? He also said their are amateurs with a negative AoA of 12 that still top the ball. Why? The low point of their swing is prior to getting to the ball. I hope that helps.
