Average Distances - How Far Do You Hit Each Club? (And Don't Lie!)

You only listed 12 clubs with a gaping hole from 115-145, your wedge distances seem a bit short for how far you say you hit a 9 and 8 iron.

Yes sorry, I left the 5W out, which I hit 215 yards - which makes it 13 clubs + putter.

My wedges are Vokey SM4's, with the normal steel shafts. My 7 - 9 irons are Taylormade Superburners with stiff custom graphite shafts (trying to establish some kind of continuity of 'feel' [I dont take divots and pick the ball clean] between the 3 irons and 4 hybrids), which, perhaps because of the less weight, I do hit proportionally further than the wedges. It does leave me with a problematic 30 yard window between the 9 Iron and PW, which I normally play with a chuck down 8 Iron. I can hit the PW up to 125 yards though, but then I force the club and the normal 2 - 3 meter draw becomes a 6 meter hook. Thanks for picking up the club I left out.

Carry distances tend to be a much more accurate way of judging relative performance.   You're about 2 clubs longer than me across the board and 40 yards longer with the driver.

Pretty much what I'd expect out of someone playing off better than +2.

Thought this was interesting, R&A; The truth about driving distance

Quote:
We would expect the average driving distance for male golfers with handicaps between scratch and 5 to be 240 yards.

Consider Kevin Stadler in 2013, average drive 289.8 yards, drives over 300 yards 33.11%, drives over 320 yards 7.14%, longest listed drive 360 yards.

So just picking a number at random (but conservative I think) say Kevin needs the potential to drive the ball 320 to be able to generate a 290 average.

The higher the index the more the gap should be between potential and average and considering Kevin probably isn't crap at ball striking, by the time the indexes get into the 5, 10, 15 range the gap between potential and average should start to get pretty staggering.

I know some responses have been along the lines of well it is not a real average as much as a typical drive but even so I sort of suspect some of those are being overestimated.

This is one of the reasons my average drive has been increasing these last few months. Other than improved mechanics, my bad drives are simply getting better .

Must be nice to use 3 less clubs. I guess you don't like the lob wedges?

Sorry, I forgot to mention I also have a 3-iron and 4-iron but I still haven't gotten used to hitting them, especially the 3-iron.

A 60˚ is on the wishlist.

You pretty much have 20 yards on me except the driver, that's about 50 yards. What length courses do you play?

Anywhere from 6000 to 7000. I play a wide range of lengths for golf course, just depends on the course and other considerations.

I take it you only get to use the driver a few times a round on the 6000 to 6500 yard courses?

As often as possible, which could be every par 4 if I wanted to. Which sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I am fickle that way :-D

I'm 23, in my 3rd year playing, and like OP I've only been playing seriously for about 3 yrs. I rarely play 18 but ave score is right around high 90s - 110 or so. D:280 3w: 260 3h: 235 4i: 215 - it either goes deep or about 20 yds lol 5i: 200 6i: 185 7i: 170 8i: 160 9i: 150 Pw: 140 52*: 120-125 56*: 100 60*: about 80 and in. Again, these are rough estimations because I don't hit the ball as consistently as Id like on the face of the club.

I know what you mean. I went to the driving range today, and just couldn't get the clubs to do what I wanted. Only the wedges succumbed occasionally to my ambitions. ;-)

    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
