I just read Eriks review of the Leupold and it gave me the wants.. I play decent courses and the markers are probably close enough.. But it just seems like a fun "toy" that *might* help my game too.. But $300 isn't cheap.. Shite.. I really want one...

Quick, someone save me from my wifes wrath and talk me out of it..

Do you have a birthday coming up? Or do you have some golf clubs laying around that you don't use? You can trade them in and pay the balance in cold hard cash. Oh wait, you said "talk me out of it."

I cant. If you wanna be talked out of one, dont read this.. =D

I find them all the time, people leave them and skycaddies in carts with annoying regularity.. and they are too much fun! from the barn to the firehouse is exactly 276.5 yards..to the driving range? 106. Insane!

Plus you will find that some of your courses arent nearly correct.. One of the local munis i frequent is atrocious, most the markers are off by 10 yards there..Not even close!

I can honestly say, it will probobly help your game more than new clubs haha.

You know, I've been thinking of it too, especially since I'm sure the courses I play I'm sure are mis-marked regularly. At least, that's how I explain the vast differences in how far I seem to hit my drives/irons shots/etc. And my favorite range is grass, so we move up and down, and they don't mark whether we're at -10 from the marked range flags, or so on.

That having been said... I decided there's something I want more. I'm on a budget, and I've actually reduced golf expenditures lately. My extra job money, rather than going towards new golf goodies, is being put into my IRA, which is far from maxed out. It's a matter of priorities. And I'm sure you have other things you'd rather spend your money on at this point. That having been said, I do really want one, and I do set some money aside towards golf goodies, and after I have the 5-Wood I want (see sig), I will start putting aside maybe $10/week for it. Then I can get it, I dunno, around my birthday in late June?

Here's the thing about rangefinders. Without one, even with markers and colored flags and my own experience on a course, I am *still* playing with distances in my head all the way up to and through the swing. I can't help it, because I am never 100% sure of the distance. With the rangefinder, that's not a problem. I know the distance - period. Then I pick a club and go and don't have to worry about it. For me, it's much better mentally, even if it doesn't get me a more accurate read...since it *feels* like it, I stop worrying.

And without a rangefinder, you'd have no way of CHECKING your guesses.

I always guess (as I'm raising the rangefinder to my face), then "confirm" or "get the actual answer" with the rangefinder.

Golfers these days. Bobby Jones never needed any stinking rangefinders to confirm his yardage!

No, he had his caddy pace off the course before they played the tournament.

Well...just tell yourself that golf is meant to be a game of chance. Either you have the right club in your hands or you don't--that the result of your next shot serves no purpose other than to set you up for the one that follows. I mean, you really don't care what you shoot, right? So, why bother being confident as you stand over a shot? Forego the rangefinder & your wife's wrath, then spend the $300 on a nice night out. Now, you've got a pleasant thought for every situation in which you're not "quite sure" of your distance.

As for me and my game, we will utilize the Pinseeker 1500 until I can justify replacing it with the smaller, more nubile Leupold! (Guess I didn't help talk you out of it, did I?) --LBB

I love mine. . .it has helped me a lot. I think more because my courses' markers were off by a few yards. . .So I was either a few short, or a few long. Now, I'm really sticking the pin. Not all the time, I'm still working on my game. But the Garmin really takes out the guesswork.

At first, I thought the thread starter was merely speaking about a laser rangefinder instead of a GPS unit. They don't seem as practical any longer.

I'd try to convince you to buy a gps unit instead. Easier to use (no pointing and shooting),they give you front/middle/and back distances of the green, they work on blind shots and will even recommend layup distances. They even tell you what time it is and can tell you how far (or short) you hit a shot.

Ya, OK.. Ya'll did a fine job of talking me out of it.. Haha! Unfortunately No b-Days coming up, but I do have clubs for sale (in the FS section, hint-hint-hint) and can bring something back to Golfsmith. Gack..

I already have a sureshot GPS unit. I don't like the annual fee and having to worry about uploading courses when I go somewhere new. I like to try lots of new courses and was thinking the rangefinders ease of "point and shoot" might be better for me.

Maybe I need to start a GPS vs Rangefinder thread?

If you have a GPS unit and don't really like using it, why don't you sell that one along with the old clubs. That should get the rangefinder financed

I have the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 and it's the probably the single best golf investment that I've ever made.

You can always go by the course markings and get a pretty good idea with a little extra figuring to take account flag positions and everything, but there's no substitute for the added confidence that knowing without a doubt what distance you are to the flag.
