Hybrid Irons vs. Regualr Irons

I bought a few hybrids 4 years ago or so. Hit them ok, but topped a bunch, and occasionally hooked the crap out of them. Which, led to little confidence with them. So, when the Mizuno MP-H4's hit the scene, I started playing the 3-4 long irons. Really preferred them to the hybrids, and they've been in the bag for the last two years.

This year, partially due to hitting my 3 wood off the deck so well, I put two hybrids back in the bag just for the hell of it. Now, I'm cranking them straight, and I think I'm preferring them to the long irons. wtf? I suppose my swing is better now, which probably led to this.

I still like the H-4's, but I'd be lying if I said the hybrids weren't easier to hit. My only complaint is that they go a bit higher than I'd like them to.

I carry 3 hybrids (5, 4, 3) and find them much more useful than the 5 and 4 irons I used to carry.  I use the 5 hybrid to "chip" with on tight lies around the green.   I replaced my 5 W with the 3 hybrid as it is much better out of the rough (which I seem to be in a lot).  I carry the 4 hybrid as it just didn't make sense to carry a 5 and 3 hybrid and a 4 iron.  I offended my sense of uniformity to keep the 4 iron.

I tried so many hybrids and never found one that really worked for me.     Finally I found the Nike VRS series (last series before they went to the cavity backed design).   The 2h is  MONSTER - its nearly as long as my 3 wood and I've put a lot of time in on it for my narrow fairway tee shot club where I don't want to pull driver.    A really good hybrid that works for you & you have gained confidence with is tough to beat ...

PS - one question for the guys that carry 3 or more hybrids (assuming you have at least 1 fairway wood too) ... must make for an awfully noisy bag with all them clanking around & they get beat up looking fast ... or if you use headcovers, the bag gets very congested and crowded looking with all those headcovers jammed in there tight.     For me, this is one of the reasons I try and limit the number of hybrids ... curious if this bothers anyone else, or am I just OCD'ing out on it

Hybrids make it so much easier for most golfers to hit the long irons. The golf manufacturers keep making iron lofts stronger and stronger until a five iron loft today is close to what a three iron used to be some time ago. Many of the pros on tour use hybrids and they certainly are good for all ages and all levels of golf talent. I started playing hybrids some six years ago and will never go back to long irons. They are easy to hit , they hit the ball higher and in some cases longer than the irons they replace. Some are made to look iron like and some are made to look fairway like. So you can pick what fits your eye and talent level.

I like my 4 Hybrid. Has saved me quite a number of times.

I should have added to the earlier post I have owned several brands of hybrids over the years.  But the ones I have now are, at least for me, preform the best.  Adams 12 OS.

If money were no object, I'd have a 4 and 5 hybrid and corresponding irons that I'd switch in and out depending on how I'm playing. My 5 and 6 irons were a struggle today but the 4h was idiot proof. Hybrids are your friend. That said, I love the flight of an iron more, but they're tough to hit if my swing is fighting me.

I have a G25 3 hybrid that I love, but I love my Mizuno MP-53 4 iron more:-D

I went away from long irons many years ago, and I would argue that most any AM golfer will benefit from doing the same.   Hell....several top PGA tour players use hybrids!!...........and these guys are the best players on the planet!!

The longest iron in my bag is a 5-iron.

Well, as a new golfer in the internet age, I tend to Google lots of golf questions.  Hybrid irons included.  I constantly see articles, threads and comments about how hybrids are "easy to hit".  I have a 5h in my bag and it is hands down my hardest club to hit.  When I do connect, I get a higher launch and more distance.  But I'm so much more consistent with my 5 iron, I'll take the less distance every time since it's less than a coin flips chance I will actually hit the hybrid well.

But apparently that's not the norm.
