What do you think of Jim Furyk's unorthodox golf swing?

Its a looping almost figure 8 on his backswing. I believe his dad's his swing coach.

there's a guy on youtube who's screen name is sevam7, i think, and i was just watching a video of his last night where he mentioned furyk. he said something that i think hit the nail on the head - let the ball flight be the judge. if the swing is repeating and it's working, then there's nothing wrong with it.

I really think there is nothing wrong with it. No seriously. He simply has a large loop that he has grooved and plays well with. On short irons especially, it's a great swing and Furyk is very accurate. His swing is somewhat a function of his double overlap grip as well.

To those who say a large loop is not a path to good ball striking... lol... look at Lee Trevino. That guy makes more flush contact than anyone besides Hogan or Moe Norman.

In the end, it's all tempo, balance, and repetive motion heading into impact.

Didn't Jim Dent have a very strange swing also? And there is a guy on the Senior tour (Alan Doyle) who won a few tournaments and some U.S. Senior Opens with a hockey swing. In the end, it's a matter if you can repeat a swing that works for you.

Most all the guys with "strange" or odd looking swings still execute the downswing within very similar and narrow windows of "sameness." This is not true of all odd swings, but certainly many that have odd backswings, but more normal downswings. I would not be surprised if there is not more variation between those that play a fade, those that generally hit straight, and those that play a predominate draw. Once Furyk gets to the top, he has a very nice move down. It look like he stands very close to the ball -- maybe that has something to do with his swing.

Jim Furyk's backswing (or anyone's unorthodox backswing) is almost analogous to a baseball player with a weird batting stance (take Andres Galarraga, or Andre Dawson, or even Cal Ripken at points throughout his career). These people start out with some weird stances and ways of preparing the ball (as opposed to someone like Alex Rodriguez or Ken Griffey Jr. who is very orthodox), but if you look at video of all the great hitters, they get in the same position with hands back, ready to drive the handle of the bat towards the ball on the swing. In much the same way, nobody would teach a kid to swing like Furyk, but he's getting to the same point as everybody else, and that's all that really matters.

Watching Jim Furyk's swing is why I was able to break 100.

Well, not exclusively. But it helped. I fell into the trap of worrying about a pretty swing very early on, but watching Jim Furyk play convinced me that a swing that works is better than a pretty swing that doesn't. And this sent me to the putting green to work on getting the ball in the hole.

I just remember he won a US Open in 2003.
