Pulling the trigger on New irons

I have been looking at new irons for a while, and everytime I seem to choose one I will hit another one, and it seems to work better for me. I am looking for something that is workable yet forgiving, without the huge offsets, and nothing that has a frying pan as a clubhead.

Tested:

Callaway X forged 2
Nike CCI forged
Taylormade TP
Taylormade tour burner
Titleist ZB
Titleist ZM

Still to be tested:

Callaway X-20 tour
Cleveland CG red
Callaway x-22 tour


The Tour prefered have a nice overall feeling, as well as the x forged 2. However I like the blades in the ZB set. The full muscles are just too hard to hit for me.

Give Mizuno a try they make really good irons and I think you'll find something your looking for, I tried all of the irons you have and finally decided on Mizuno for the feel forgiveness and over all they we're the best clubs in the bunch for me.

I wanted to try the mizuno's but my local store doesnt carry many left handed mizunos in-store.

Ahh,no stores within a short drive of you either? alot of times when you get into bigger cities you get bigger stores and better selection,at least thats the case where i'm from.

Those irons generally are not for someone of your handicap, but you may be a good ball striker.

Try the AP2s and i10s if you want a forgiving players club. All of the clubs that you listed are sweet, so just go by personal preference and feel.

That's too bad about the Mizunos. Maybe there's a golfsmith or something around?

Find a club fitter....not a retail store that fits. Hit all sorts of things. That is the BEST way. Shafts are huge. A fitter will help you the best. We can't really give you great advice on here because there are so many factors in what will be best for you.

I'm quite surprised at a 30 handicap that you posess the ball striking ability to hit those irons consistently, but if you do more power to you. I'm getting the Taylormade TP and they are amazing and really long for me.

I'm looking between those and the mizuno mp-52's. I want a cavity back that sets up like a blade. The whole package. Workability and forgiveness. I was hoping to go with cast irons because they can take a bigger beating.

Check out the MacGregor line especially the MTmid and the Adams Ideo Pro. The MacGregor MT has one of the most beautiful sweet spots in golf. Like butter. It feels like the ball is on the club face a fraction of a second longer than most clubs. Very workable, very forgiving. MacGregor MT mid.

i suggest you go with the taylormades. given your handicap, blades wouldn't be a good investment. you need something forgiving, try some cavity backs.

I don't think the sweetspot it very large, but if hit well they perform great. There is decent forgiveness on mis-hits, and fantastic distance for the lofts, (47 PW) The workability was the thing that I was impressed with.

Seriously, or check out some r7s, or same callaway i-brids or something. Who cares if they don't look the greatest. Being a 30 handicap you should care more about getting your score down, then how thick the topline of your iron is. You don't want a workable iron anyway, just get some r-7s or x-20s, those will still be not forgiving enough, but you'll have room to grow.

It is partially psychological, and partially preference. I am not a fan of huge offsets, and a large clubs seems - well, too large. My set right now completely lacks feedback, which is what I am looking for, as well as what I previously stated.

And to tie it back to the tour comment, I find those provide the most feedback. I am definitly interested in hearing which other clubs have great feedback, though. Also not breaking the bank helps, trying to keep these irons under $900-1000. My ball striking is decent, nothing spectaular obviously. Most of the mis-hits are from getting angry, rushing the shot, or from lacking concentration.

I am looking on the Mcgregor site and it seems that they do not make left handed, except for the OS lineup, is this correct?

Mizuno MP-52s. Easy to hit, excellent feedback and you also get workability with them. And, they have a blade topline. With the shafts you want, they will hit you for $800.

Adams Tech A4 are also a good option for you too. I would still rate the Mizunos a notch above them though.

Decent ball striking won't play with a blade though, if you don't hit the sweet spot 80 percent of the time minimum i wouldn't consider anything close to a blade or pro CB. Get some ibrids or something with a thick sole, you think you need feedback, being a 30, you need something that will launch it straight, and do so even when you mis hit it. Your gonna do yourself more harm than help playing blades or pro CBs at your handicap. Wait till your about a 15 or below, then check into something that's a little harder to hit.
