Payne was one of my favorite golfers, and I've shared on another thread that he hit one of the greatest shots I have ever seen. Anyway, back in the early 90's, I decided to start doing sketches of some of my favorite golfers. I hadn't drawn since high school before that, but for some reason I was (drawn) to it. I thought that maybe it would be something I could leave behind for my children someday. My goal was to try and get as many as I could autographed. Below is my sketch of Payne autographed by him at Southern Hills. I am not an artist, so please take it easy on me. I just wanted to share it with others who had a love for Payne.

You may not classify yourself as an artist, but you did a good job. I have a "professional" sketch of Payne (from the neck up) that I paid for in Hilton Head. After I got home, I looked at it more closely and realized it is not that great a likeness. That can happen when you "get carried away with the moment". Yours looks professional and his looks amateurish.

PEZGolf,

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I thought you might like it, because I knew you cared so much for Payne. He was such a golfing gentleman.

Notice my location, I live about 3 hours straight south of where the plane crashed. Although I was only 13 years old when it happened I remember watching Payne play on TV for years with my Grandpa who had died a year earlier. Whenever I think of Payne I think of my grandpa. I can barely type as I wipe my tears thinking about it.

Payne is my favorite player of that time.

Nice post. Payne has affected many of us. I am glad that you have memories of the times that you shared with your Grandpa. One of the most amazing things that I saw about Payne was the interview on "Golf Talk Live" on The Golf Channel a few months before he died. He said that we are all going to be called by God someday, and what is important is how we have lived our lives and if we have loved our families and served Him. He then said that we can be called at any time, and that he was ready. It is as if God said, "You are ready for me and I am ready for you." His wife, Tracey, did a great job giving the eulogy at the huge funeral service. She is a very strong person of faith, and that has helped her and their two children to get through this. I am sure God knew that, and that was part of the Plan.
