Well almost a year ago my uncle gave me a set of clubs which I still use. Included with the clubs was a Ping Anser 3. i played with it for a few months and putted fine with it, but figured I might be able to putt better with a mallet. To make a long story short my putting became horrible once I got out on the course with a mallet and I gave up and went back to my Anser 3. Anyone else gone through this at all? I feel like I can control the speed and direction of the ball better with the blade Vs. a mallet. Is this common for a lot of people?

I teeter / totter back and forth and as a result, I tend to dabble with many styles of putters.

It varies from month to month.

I'm gaming my YES mallet right now....but that's not to say that Scotty won't be back in March. I'm psycho that way.

For me it's always been the opposite. I like the look of a blade and have purchased a couple over the years, but I can't putt with them. The first big issue I have is alignment - with a blade I just never seem to get ball started on line. The second issue is distance control - with a blade I tend to usually be short (or over compensate and end up way long). Because of those issues I think I'll stick with a mallet for the forseeable future.

I guess it's just a preference thing, also since that was my first putter I've grown used to it and maybe that's why putting seems easier with it.

I prefer mallet over blade, I have a Rex X that I absolutely love. Just like the weighted feel of it compared to a blade style.

I find a mallet does most of the work for you. It naturally swings forward and helps maintain that line.

It might not necessarily be the style of putter, unless you hate the look of the mallet, but the putter itself. The Ping may just have better feel in your hands and it might just give you more confidence. I've putted fine with mallets and blades before. Now, I have a half-mallet putter which I am very happy with.

I use an arc stroke, and most mallets are face balanced, which dont go well with my stroke. However Im experimenting with a semi-mallet with a plumbers neck which gives it decent toe-hang. Im going to put a jumbo putter grip on it and see how it works out.

I find that blades have a lot more feel and I find it easier to tell if Im striking my putts solidly with a blade.
To me, mallets just have no feel. Ive tried a few and I just dont like them.
Lemmie put it this way. Last year I bought a Scotty Cameron Red-X, used it for about 2 weeks and absolutely HATED it. I thought that maybe after a while I would get used to it and would like it, nope, I never did like it at all. So, if I cant be happy with a Cameron mallet putter, I dont see myself playing a mallet any time soon.
My Mizuno TPM is a mid-mallet (slightly bigger head than a traditional blade but its nowhere near as big as a full mallet) and I like it, but I dont see myself ever again playing a full mallet putter. They just arent for me.

same thing happend to me. I had this crappy old Dunlop Vista putter. It was pretty much a direct copy of the newport by SC... well, i got a new putter for my birthday (in september) and got a white steel 2 ball. my putting got worse, if anything with it. I am now looking back into blades.... Ping Karsten series or Taylormade Rossa series... just gotta find the right model...

I haven't been a fan of most inserted putters. The exceptions to this are the black faced Odysseys and especially the TM putters. Those red inserts are great feeling to me.

I personally can putt with both mallet and blade. Makes no difference for me in terms of performance. I just personally prefer blade style or if I were to go with mallet, mid-mallet styles like Scotty Cameron Fastback suites my taste.

I've had a similar experience lately. I used to putt with an old Wilson blade but wanted to get a new putter. I decided to go with a Yes! Valerie mallet style putter and just figured that my early troubles with it were a matter of getting used to it but I still haven't got back to the putting form that I had when I was using the old Wilson.

When I got the Yes! I thought that a mallet would be better for my straight back and through putting style and I tried to get far too mechanical with my putting stroke which just doesn't work for me - I'm much more of a feel putter. I've picked up a second hand Rife Antigua blade and I'm hoping that going back to a blade will get me back to sinking more putts, but only time will tell.

I find the putters with elasomer inserts in the face to feel very dead. I like the forged Mizuno putters and any putter with a brass head (like the Bullseye) because they have a soft feel, but still give you feedback and let you know when you mishit.
