My first year of golfing was 2008, I golfed about 20 rounds last year and broke an honest 100 once (98). I obviously have many flaws in my game that I wouldn't even know where to start. I think when it comes down to it, I need to focus on the fundamentals, ie grip, posture, stance, etc.

Anyway, I have been really pumped about getting out golfing this season, unfortunately, the golfing season is from May to October which leaves me with a lot of down time. I cleaned up my clubs and organized my bag last night which really kicked in the urge of getting out there.

I would like to do some drills that don't require hitting a ball since I can't really hit into the snow. Maybe some drills to help keep my swing in check and to ensure everything is consistent.

Any suggestions?

I know you said drills that dont have to do with hitting a ball. Try to get some practice balls like the foam or plastic ones. With those, practice your short game alot inside. I also have a long winter also so thats what I do, or I will go to the heated range.

Most mornings I'll swing my hand crafted weighted club. 10-20 slow, smooth swings really helps. I made this out of an old persimmon 3 wood, and a 1/2 inch steel rod. I duct taped the rod to the shaft of the club. It's heavy and really keeps the big golf muscles in tune.

If it's snow covered, my feet will be on the driveway and I'll swing the club through the snow. You can get a good feel for your swingpath.

I also have one of those 9 foot putting mats with a hole and ball return. I just putt a few times whenever I get the urge. During the dark days of winter, it stays set up in our mostly unused living room. It can be rolled up and packed away in under a minute. I bought this in the box at a thrift store for $6! Whenever we have a bunch of kids over (which is always) the putting contests are fun. I made 18 in a row once! The record is 21 by a 12 year old girl who never saw a golf club before... lucky little %$#@^

If there's no snow, I'll play chip and fetch with the dog. When she sees me get the yellow fetching ball, she goes nuts!

I can't wait for spring!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
