This got me thinkin' .. what are some of the main drivers y'all have used throughout your career?

I started playing in 1990 .. after a few oversized graphite golfsmith thingy's:

Taylor Made Tour Burner 7 degree - Aldila gold graphite stiff ('92 - '93)
Founders Club ?? model ('93)
Tommy Armour ?? model ('93)
Big Bertha Warbird 9 degree ('93 - '95)
Yonex 48" graphite - college coach wouldn't let me take it to tournaments, lol ('95)
Titleist Howitzer Titanium 8 degrees ('95 - '97)
Great Big Bertha Warbird 7 degrees ('98 - '04)
Taylor Made R580 aldila nv-65s 7.5 ('04 - present)

what about irons?

My main set in my haydays were an early 1980's model Titleist Forged Blade (2 - PW) with X100 Dynamic Gold shafts - still have the irons. I bought these irons from a used store in 1992 for $80. Reshafted, regripped, fixed the lies, etc. Used them through college.

I switched between a few sets over a summer before I use the ones I still use today:
2 - PW Tommy Armour 845s Ti's.

I've only ever had... a few.

I played the first few years with a persimmon MacGregor/Nicklaus driver. I still have it. Then I got the original Titleist PT driver. Still have that, too. Next I got the Titleist 983K (yeah, I went that long between them). From that I moved to the 905S because I should have gotten the 983E. Now I have what I have in my bag because it's marginally better than the 905S.

I started playing in 1998...

Drivers:
- Mitsushiba, one of those "buy 3 woods at once" sets
- Excalibur steel shaft (after the Mitsushiba head flew about 200 yds down the 5th hole and into a pond)
- TaylorMade SuperSteel 9.5 (hated that driver, never could get it in the air)
- TaylorMade 320 (great driver, can't believe they made clubheads that small though)
- Titleist 983K (current driver that I'll stick with until I find something that gives me an extra 15 yards or so)

Irons:
- Spalding Tour
- Excalibur (starter iron set)
- TaylorMade SuperSteels (won in a drawing)
- Mizuno MP-33s (thought I was better than I was)
- Ping S59 Tour (current irons - really like them a lot)
In My Bag:
Driver: Titleist 983K 9.5°, Harmon HTD CB-65R

I started playing serriously in 1993. I bought a set from Nevada Bob's it came with a steel headed Accell 10*. Next came the orriginal Taylor Made Burner Bubble 9.5* stiff. I was hitting it very long and very high with no roll. In fact, I could actually back up my driver. Three years latter I got what seemed like a great deal on a Tour Forged TiBubble II 7.5*. It was too much club and had the sweet spot of a pea. I struggled with it for two seasons and then traded it in to Golfsmith when they were offering a special 50% extra on trades. I went to the original Nike 270 Titanium 8*. Unfortunately I only hit it into a net 10 times before I bought it. I used it for the next 2 seasons and played reasonably well with it but wanted more loft. Last season I traded one of my clients 3 personal training sessions for my current driver, a Titleist 983K 9.5*. Funny how it all came full circle and I am back at 9.5* and hitting the ball about the same distance. Then again, I was in my 20's then.

Nevada Bobs?? the one in Ypsilanti?

I used to work in golf shops in Ann Arbor, Caddy Shack to be precise. It was on main street on the west side.

Also worked at the Golf Haus in Grand Rapids on 28th street a few summers in college. Went to GVSU.

Me too .. took me forever to go to a new one, still got it too. Amazing during the time of the callaway insurgence that those goofy Taylor gold burners with the bubble shafts were out, I never could hit those.

Funny thing is I wanted the Callaway but couldn't hit it. The swing weight felt way too light. I hit the Bubble way better and went that way.

I was the other way around. The bubble just felt way to weird for me, too much weight in the grip end of the club. I played the Big Bertha before the Great Big, felt comfortable with it .. and went about 15 yards further. That club was the bomb .. then comes taylor out with all their new stuff .. never thought anything could go longer than my callaway .. wrong ... get 20+ more yards off of my R580!

Drivers,

Back in the early 80's I found a Wilson Persimmon 1 wood in a dumpster that I played with for years.

Then I got a new complete set of Wilson 1200LT's that I played with through high school and after.

I then in the early 90's bought a Ping ISI Persimmon set of woods that I played with up until a month ago when I finally went the way of the metal woods.

    • Short gym set at lunch;  bench press, four sets of five, 180 lbs.   Did a few of the medicine ball / driver drill too while I was at it.
    • I took a look at a 6,300 yard fairly easy course and it was 99% distance and then a 6,800 yard more challenging course and it was 97% distance. Do you have an example of one less that 95% or 90%? Maybe I am misunderstanding something. (6,310/220) + 40.9 = 69.6. Course rating is 70.0 with a 120 slope. Less than 1% other factors? (6,804/220) + 40.9 = 71.8. Course rating is 74.0 with a 140 slope. About 3% other factors? These are more extreme: (4,698/220) + 40.9 = 62.3. Course rating is 62.7 with a slope of 101.  (7,569/220) + 40.9 = 75.3. Course rating is 77.4 with a slope of 155. So long hard courses are 97% length and short easy courses are 99% length in these examples. I am new to this so maybe I am all wet.
    • I think in fairness what he means is Tommy's chances to win PGA Tour events are fairly similar in number to Rory's chances to win the Masters. I don't think he's remotely saying that Tommy and Rory are in the same league. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I took the comment as meaning if he keeps giving himself chances to win then eventually he will win one. Rory had a thing in his head about the Masters and won anyway. Tommy has a thing in his head about PGA Tour events. They do seem fairly analogous to me.
    • Don't get me wrong, I like TF from a nice-guy-next-door perspective but I was surprised at the nerves he showed on the 2nd putt on 17th. That was unmistakably a stroke of a player who had already submitted to the writing on the wall. Honestly I would not expect that out of a veteran tour player. I would have liked to continue rooting for him but gotta see a bit more fight from him. Rory could be reasonably accused of being a head case but he is a fighter. Big difference.
    • Um no. Rory Wins PGA Tour 29, EU 19, Majors 5, FedEx Cup 3 Tommy PGA Tour 0, EU 7, Majors 0, FedEx 0 He may win eventually, but he’s not in the same league as Rory.
