OK, what has really changed in Wedge technology the past 10 years?

I have been playing some Vokey 52/56 that are probably 8 years old or so, but what has really changed? The sole on those Cleveland CG12 look fantastic for having more play in laying the blade open in tight lies, but other than that, what's worth upgrading for?

Your grooves are probably worn out if they are eight years old. The newer Vokeys definitely have more groove volume than they did a decade ago.

Have you been watching an Face Forward wedge commercial?

I would say that grooves are the #1 thing that's changed. Eight years for a wedges is a long time for the grooves if you play a reasonable number of times per year. Vokeys are spinnier then they used to be. Some wedges have some cool inserts (CG14), but I think that's more of a minor change in technology. Along with the grooves, I think CNC milling to make the face as smooth as possible (to increase spin consistency) has definately changed wedges (and irons as well). If I were you, I'd buy some new(er) equipment if my wedges were worn out.

I have got to say if you just get a groove sharpener they should be about the same a the grooves today.

That's the first thing I thought of even before groove volume, design, etc.

This is somewhat related but I heard today that the tour pros change wedges every 2 or 3 weeks because of the grooves being worn out!! That is nuts!

Wow....that is nuts. I suppose with unlimited resourses and a fitting trailer full of skillful clubmakers then it is fairly common.

Jeev Milkha Singh still plays with Ping Zing wedges in his bag, so there is obviously nothing he feels has changed that would make it worth him changing wedges.

VJ Singh plays (i think they are the 900 series, disguised as CG12) but he gets a fresh set, either entirely new wedges, or has them re grooved every week. If you got free stuff anytime you wanted it, wouldnt you take advantage of it if you hit as many range balls as him? Guys like veej and tiger hit so many range balls they wear out the grooves on their irons in about a year.. So imagine how fast their wedges could go. As to answer your question, there have been changes, but as to how much spin you can get, i really think the big kicker is spin out of rough, as todays wedges get alot more bite from the thick stuff than those of yesteryear.

Well, you guys have convinced me - I'm going to grab some new wedges to replace my Vokeys (probably new Vokeys). Right now I have a 56.12 and a 252.08, but I have some new irons coming and have to figure out what spread I want.

I'm not talking about different styles or whatever...I mean because the grooves wear out so quickly, they get a new set of the same wedges. Not BS, a tour player is the one who said it.

thats not BS at all. Vijay changes his wedges each tournament he plays, and during every major championship every tour player has new wedges in the bag. Yes its a bit crazy, but if you had access to new wedges, and played as much as those guys it would make sence.

plus they prolly hit

thousands of balls during practice each week. so i bet their wedges wear out A LOT sooner than those of us who play twice a week
