Geoff Ogilvy - Way to hyped

Man to watch NBC's coverage you would have thought that Geoff Ogilvy was the second coming of Old Tom Morris or Harry Vardon. First off lets get the Match Play wins out of the way. The first one he had the good fortune of taking the path of least resistance (which often identifies the winner in these tournaments - not necessarily the best golfer) In his win he faced elimination 10times with his playing partners having putts to win there matches (but they all choked). 4 of the 6 wins have been in the limited field events (Mercedez and 3 WGC) His US Open he wasnt even being mentioned until he chipped in on the 17th and watched Paddy, Monty and Phil gag there way through the 18th.

Dont get me wrong he's a good player just not the over hyped Fella that the NBC cast made of him this past weekend.

I think Ogilvy should get more hype. The guy is so smooth and doesn't seem to have an apparent weakness. I'm a fan.

How many times has tiger won because everybody was choking? If he can drive the ball like he did this week he is a threat to have a big year with maybe another major. Not to many out there have more than one major.

3 WGC events

1 US Open Mercedes this year. And your criticism is based on the fact that he was able to finish the job and others couldn't? He didn't gag his way through the 18th in the U.S. Open and his chip in on 17 was under extreme pressure. It was a 72 hole tournament. If anything, he's underhyped. Probably the most underrated player out there. Having the habit of winning big events and remaining cool when others fall apart might be evidence of the opposite of what you are suggesting.

I watched the coverage over the weekend and agree that NBC was touting him pretty highly. To say he's among the favorites at Augusta already may be a stretch, but if he keeps playing at his current level they're right to consider him a contender. No doubt that he played really well over the week - especially going 12 under on the final 30+ holes (matching Tiger's preformance when he killed Cink last year... which yes, NBC noted about 5 times) Also a good point about winning in smaller fields, hadn't noticed that.

You have to like the way he's played recently though, he's off to a great start. I love his straight, high ball flight. The question comes down to his short game - if he can match how he has putted recently he'll give anyone a run for their money. I agree with cstorms... the guy is smooth. Plus, Auzies are just cool.

I just love how international the PGA has become too. All of the big tournaments - not just the majors - are the world's best battling it out. It's how it should be. Even the Honda Classic next week has Sergio, Els, Camillo, Rory McIlroy, etc. It's fun to see these guys out on a regular basis, not just the majors.

I don't think he faced a "path of least resistance" this year. Sutherland, Katayama, Villegas, McIlroy, Cink, Casey. His putting was absolutely amazing last week and the fact that he doesn't choke under pressure while those around him are, make him just that much better. I agree with those who say he is underhyped. I know world golf rankings vary each week, but right now, he's number

4 in the world. If you want to talk about overhyped, talk about Ryo Ishikawa and all the other young players who have been touted as the next Tiger Woods.

I was more refering to his first win, the Mercedez in Hawaii. Winning the WGC is legit, as I mentioned and NBC mentioned all weekend. Harder than winning four days of stroke play, in my own humble opinion. Well, maybe not harder, but certainly no easier. Ask Tiger.

Like I said, I like the guy. If he keeps striping it and sinking every putt, he's a major contender at Augusta and beyond.

I agree with the others here...I feel as though he goes under the radar. This has also been brought up a number of times in the media, asking him how he prefers flying under the radar. He's one of my favorite players right now. Silky smooth swing, and he doesn't seem to let go of a lead when he gets one.

But there were a bunch of "winners" from 2008 that haven't cracked the top 64 in world rankings... there were about 20 legit pros he had to beat out, the rest of the guys won small tournaments to qualify. Daniel Chopra, Ryan Palmer, Mark Turnesa, Parker McLachin, Greg Craft, Richard Johnson, etc. Not to mention that the world's #1-4 were absent. No Tiger, Sergio, Paddy, Phil. Obviously there's a list of great players to go along with these guys, but I'd rather face this field of ~30 players than the Accenture.

Anyways, we're getting away from the point - I like Ogilvy. I'm a big fan and think he's a great player who's at the top of his game right now. I had just never thought about the point someone else made about winning in smaller fields.

Ogilvy's a great ball striker. Smooth and syrupy. He'll win another major this year.

Oglivy seems to have three swings, the full swing form which he never deviates from (driver-wedge) the bump n run around the green, and a putting stroke. Obviously this is an exaggeration, point is, he's sometimes rather boring to watch (this coupled with his robotic demeanor).

Good player..could contend for another major, but I'd like to see a bit more shotmaking if I was going to have confidence in that possibility.

IMO, Ogilvy is deserving of the hype and media attention. When Ogilvy is playing well, he can beat any player in the world, including Tiger.

I couldn't agree more. I'm kinda tired of all the "next Tiger" stuff although it is a natural occurance. As golf fans we're just trying to place our bets on who we can later say "I told you so" about. But I really believe Olgivy is a great, yes great, player right now. We shall see how long that holds up. One thing I like most about his play is his high and straight ball flight. I've rarely seen him, just as an example, try to cut a 7 iron into a back right pin location. He seems to just take an 8 iron and hit high and straight to the middle of the green. Obviously that's not a constant every hole, but you get the idea.

I can see that. I don't find him nearly as boring as Furyk though. He reminds me more of a Goosen or Couples in that sense. I always liked watching Goosen because of his overly calm demeanor. That in it's own way can be a little intimidating to an opponent.

Ogilvy should be 3rd or possibly 2nd in the World Rankings.

I think Olgilvy will be 3rd or possibly 2cd soon. Ditto on Garcia.
