Hey everybody,
I was just wondering if you twirl or spin your club after you hit your shot. It's a funny habit like when I flick pens through my fingers. Just thought it was funny that I don't twirl the club but I've got this thing with the pens.

How many of you spin your clubs after a shot?

I don't do it too much after a shot, but I flip the putter in my hand just before I set up, because it "refreshes" the feel for me. This is a little move I picked up from my brother without realizing it, but have realized what it actually does for me since I've used it.
Damn you people, this is golf!

I have no idea how to do it. I wish I did.

Damn Tiger.
Yes, I do after a shot that I really like.
But on a bad shot, I'm not watching long enough to do anything with my club except put it back in the bag.

I flip every club prior to addressing my shot. Not sure why but it's probably the same reason as lazebone. I think I picked it up while watching Kenny Perry at the practice range at Firestone some time back.

I do the club twirl between the fingers (like a baton) while waiting for my next shot. No, I was never a majorette.

I will sometimes do a little spin (not like a baton) after a good swing, sort of like Tiger does. I didn't learn it from him though... I've been doing it since before he came on the radar... maybe he picked it up from me????

I have no idea where I got the move from but I've been doing it for 25 years. For me it's just an unconscious reaction to a good shot.

No....it always struck me as a manufactured motion.

I'm a tad different, I suppose. I'll hit a flush shot and simply follow through and pick up my tee or repair divot immediately with the confident knowledge that the ball is on it's way to the best of my ability to stroke it. It'll land where it'll land.

On the other hand, I'll stare down a mishit or bad shot for two reasons: First to see where it ends up which saves time later on a ball hunt. Second is the ball flight may help me determine what went wrong with the swing so I can "fix" it in my mind and immediately swing a "repaired" practice stroke to anchor down what to do right.

Perhaps if the game ever got boring from hitting flushed shots every time I'd need to invent a "finishing" move like twirling a club. Until then I'll just stay the course.

I seem to twirl the club when i bring my hands down after a swing. Its not something i think about, it just seems to happen.

Never do it. Ever. It's seems to be a way of acknowledging to yourself and others that you nutted a shot, when the results should be obvious enough.

But thats just me.

I do not twirl my club after a shot - it's just not natural for me to do so. However, like you with the pens, I have one thing I do about 100% of the time after holing a putt. I pull the ball out of the hole with my thumb and first 2 fingers, then toss the ball up a few inches so it spins and catch it in my palm - it's always the same. I think I started doing with when there was water in the hole so that when I put the ball into my pocket it wasn't quite as drenched with water. Now I find myself doing it all the time.

no twirl, either in the fingers (drumstick twirl) or in palm (Mickelson twirl that he does before every shot) or post shot (Tiger). I thought twirling was for baton girls, rhythmic gymnastics, and drummers......not golfers.

Now that I think about it, I have a long putter that I twirl once in a while (preshot to remove tension). I twirl in Indian Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark sword guy style (the one Harrison Ford responds to by shooting with his sidearm)

For guys like McIlroy and Tiger it's cool, they are good enough to sport such a motion. I do it once in a while if I hit a really good shot. Hopefully I'll be doing it alot this season. :P

I was at LSU's pitch and putt course and my first shot was a pin seeker that missed holing out by a foot. I twirled my wedge after that shot.

I do it when I hot a decent shot. I've seen it happen so many times that I picked it up subconsiously.

well, the reason I started this thread is that when I play racquet sports, I uncontrollably spin the racquet and twirl it when the ball is in play and yet, I still don't spin the club out when I finish my shots but I see some people doing it a lot. Just a small funny sense of irony.

    • Day 353: mirror work again today. Working on the same stuff - wrist twist and shaft lean.
    • This is my second year playing golf, I started last season but have always struggled with a slice. I've tried multiple things to try and fix the slice: Closing the face. Rotating my right hand out or clockwise in the grip. Keeping the club head low in my back swing. Focusing on a straight swing path. Trying the straighter arms like Bryson D. (as seen in the videos above) Trying to not let me hips get too far ahead of my down swing. Trying to keep my shoulders down until after I've made contact with the ball. Etc. I recently changed to the straighter arms which has helped me adjust away from such a drastic slice. So it has helped a bit. Before that, I was trying to keep the club head low in the back swing and this was the most helpful in correcting the slice, however it drastically removed power and distance in the strikes and would even sometimes result in a hook. About a couple months ago I had a single lesson with my driver and learned some helpful things, but have since struggled to perform what I learned well. One of the things in the lesson was to keep my shoulder down more in the the down swing until after making contact with the ball. This would help the slice a bit, sometimes drawing the ball. To even it out, I was instructed to rotate my hips a bit earlier in the down swing. What I have noticed however with the earlier hip rotation is that it's really hurting my lower back a lot. Since backing off on that it's helped not injure my low back as much. I believe my main issue might possibly be the swing path, being a Pull Slice.   See above, was mid typing when you posted. I have never watched Moe Norman's swing to be honest. I have never measure my hip rotation, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that after you read about my hip rotation / back pain issue.
    • Two questions… Are you trying to swing like Moe Norman? What's your hip turn like? Have you ever measured it?
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 2 years My current handicap index or average score is: 18 Index My typical ball flight is: Slice/Fade with a driver and FW. Generally straight with irons, varies some days left or right. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Driver slice. Videos:
    • What are the best drills to practice awareness for club face control? This one came to mind after remembering a bit from the latest release of the podcast. I also think that I have poor club face to path awareness.
