I have the same problem.........sometimes! One good thing is that a thin shot usually goes straight. I've hit some awesome iron shot results that I hit thin. For me, I try to stick my butt out a little more and concentrate on keeping my spine angle.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

I had that problem for awhile. I stopped it most of the time by keeping my knees bent a little more through my swing.

Maybe you could try (no garuntee) moving the ball back in your stance a little? It could be possible you have let the ball drift forward in your setup? Just one idea. I'm sure more are coming.

Good Luck!

I know you had the topic about the reverse C's. My answer is the same. When I slide my hips, instead of rotating them and letting my leg straighten, I hit the ball thin and end up in a reverse C.

Hi Titleist Man

A few things. One, I would absolutely not move the ball back in your stance. If you do that, you are going to change a lot of different parts of your swing including your swing plane. Ball position is a key to having solid contact but it would be like putting out a fire with a grenade. Don't cause carnage to your swing.

Thin shots can result from a ton of different things but lack of lag is a huge reason. I know a lot of instant feedback drills like a lag stick - trust me, fun - but if you want a way to practice this at the range tomorrow I would practice hitting the ball out of divots. I am running out of room here but it will help you focus on lag and if you take a slight divot it will give you the same feeling that those smash bags do. It's a quick fix as opposed to a permanent fix but it works for a lot of players to get that feel back. Hope that helps.

Check that your not straighting your right leg on the backswing as this will slightly raise your body.

There are many different things that can be causing this, and none can be definitive without seeing you swing. All of the above COULD be the cause....or not.

One thing I would encourage you to do, especially since it's cool weather: Make SURE you take a full backswing. Cutting off your backswing early will ALWAYS cause a thin shot. Other than that, it's impossible to say over a computer.

Do not lose spine angle in the downswing, maintain lag (good aid is the pure ball stricker, google), extend through impact

A thin shot simple means that you are reaching the bottom of your arc before the ball instead of in front of the golf ball. you have to figure out what you are doing to cause this, some of the things could be..........

1) swaying
2) not keep your arms extended to the ground while relaxed
3) moving up on the ball

I recommend you have someone watch your swing and help you figure it out or take a video of your swing for us to visualize your help you diagnosis the problem.

Not necessarily. I know a guy who hits a lot of thin shots but always takes a divot. He just catches it too early on the downswing. His divot starts an inch or two in front of the ball.

Topped shots only on thin lies, good shots with the ball sitting up?
Maybe you may be scooping the ball, not hitting down enough on it?
It probably wouldn't be apparent at the range if you hit off mats or fluffy lies at a grass range.
I like easy fixes for me. I like to look at the front of the ball with the mid/short irons.
It helps me out.
Then again, I am about a 15 so you could kick my butt on any given day!

I used to hit a lot of thin ones (was a picker) until I started intentionally trying to take a divot with every shot. I look 2" in front of the ball and envision that as the bottom of my swing, and it's made a huge difference. I almost always hit down on the ball now, and almost always take a divot -- sometimes a huge digger-like piece of carpet. No more thin shots.

Charlie King has a good drill for this: put down two balls in front of you about a foot apart bordering where you would usually place your ball (i.e., a ball 6" above, and a ball 6" below), and then imagine a horizontal line between the balls. Then just practice for 10-15 minutes taking a divot. Your club should start taking a divot in front of the imaginary line, which shows you're hitting down on the ball or, as some folks say, compressing it. He has some good videos at the Reynolds Golf Academy site, showing this and some other good drills.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
