practice chips, pitches and 1/4 shots to see if you shank these swings and work you way up to 3/4 swings and you might discover what you are doing differently.

I've found that when I start screwing up on partial shots, I am using my arms too much and not turning my chest/shoulders like I should. When I focus on a good chest/shoulder turn (even on 30-40 yard pitch shots), I can get my groove back. I ran into this today at the range.

Check to makes sure you are following through on the shot. I had this problem and it was basically deceleration.

This was my first thought when I read the OP's post.

These were my thoughts as well. I will do this occasionaly also. What I have found is that I get lazy thinking that I am only hitting a 3/4 shot and I don't need to give it the full swing and follow through. If it happens again, just stay focused, take a good turn, stay down on the ball, and remember to accelerate through the ball even though you are only taking a 3/4 swing.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Sometimes this comes from trying to restrict your swing effort, your rythym gets off, your weight sneaks towards your toes and boom. The easy way to tell if this is what is happening is just to make sure your posture and weight are where they should be and then focus on rythym not effort for a few swings.

When this happens to me it is because I am usually quitting on the shot. I don't get the follow through along with the chest turn that I need. I guess I also get "lazy" with the swing and decelerate.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
