Golf Course Job

Got my first job at my local course today, Gleannloch Pines GC. I am so excited. I am working in "Guest Services", which is basically clean carts, balls, recharge carts, and use the picker. While it may only pay minimum wage $6.55/hr, the discounts are amazing. Free golf and access to the range and handicap system. Plus say i was to buy a Cobra S9-1 driver, usually about $400 at my course with tax, my price- $207.94. BEAST. I can't wait for all the extra practice time.

One of the best jobs I ever had was working on the maintenance crew at a private country club right out of college before landing a "real" job. Out at dawn to cut the greens and change the cups, riding the three wheeler trap rake, and cutting the fringes and first cut of the rough. It was pleasant work out in nature and no boss looking over my shoulder all the time. We finished up around 2 or 2:30 every day and got to play free with a cart Monday thru Thursdays after work. It unfortunately did not pay real well but at the time my expenses were minimal anyway and it was the only way to play on a really nice exclusive course. Enjoy it!

Wow and Im sure reffs at baseball and football games go home and watch the cooking channel dont they, heck no, I work at 2 golf courses. I get free lessons, free golf and range balls all day everyday, I can play free at other great courses haha the list goes on and on. Not to mention I have fun everytime I play a round where ever it may be.

Absolutely disagree. I've been working part time at the course and playing 100+ rounds a year since I retired 3 years ago. It's hands down the best of both worlds.

I've worked at 2 different golf courses...one course I was a maitnence worker...mowing greens/fringes/fairways, cutting cups, raking traps, etc...all at the crack of dawn. I loved it. Got free golf M-Th as it was a private, high end country club. No range use sadly though.

At the other course, an even higher end country club I was a bag boy...get/put away bags, pick the range, work the pro shop, etc...free golf M-F, unlimited use on the range any day/any time.

And yes, the discounts are LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEELY...cost + 10%

I'm 14 and I caddy. Its the best. If I double bag for a two-some I'll get $120 for a little under 4 hours of work. When there is no one looking for a caddy, I pick the range which usually includes driving in the cart to pick them up, cleaning the balls and then practicing for about an hour until I have to do it again.

and yeah... i work weekends at my home course and hell if ive gotten sick of it... with or without the job id be playing the same amount of golf... the only diff is that without the job i have to pay to play... heck i actually play a few rounds more since i dont have to pay for it

Yeah, not so much. I've been at my course for 5 years now, and have played practically everyday since. I think its more that I get sick with work because I can't get out to golf. And that's really just in jest. It's the best job I've ever had.

Guam, you mention the pay isn't great, but you also mention the perks make up for it. And you couldn't be any more right. Working outside services, as long as you work hard and make the golfers feel welcome you can make a buttload in tips.

20+ yrs on the course here. Enjoy all of it for the most part, but currently unemployed due to budget cuts. Still prefer to stay on course, but haven't had much luck lately because I can't afford to work for FREE. It's a cut throat business to say the least!

Don't listen to him, obviously never worked at a golf course. I've worked at two different courses, and they were the best jobs, and only increased my love for the game.

Word of caution, I'm sure the owner of the golf shop won't appreciate posting those cost numbers on the internet... if he found it... easy way to lose your job.

I think those numbers are pretty standard, cost + 10%, that's how it has been at the clubs I've worked at. 10% is basically a restocking fee.

Exactly I get to get better at the game, for basically no cost at all. Plus if you enjoy what you work at the work may not seem as bad as it does to other people. Having fun while working hard.

and those prices are pretty much standard as stated earlier, i talked to a few friends who work at other clubs who get the same discount.

Or for some of us it's just cost..

I've worked on golf courses since 1987, and can say for certainty that for me there have been spans where I haven't wanted to touch a golf club. Fortunately they haven't lasted very long, but there has been some times where I felt burned out from the game, meaning after spending 10 hours/day working the last thing I wanted to do was spend more time there.

well i only work three days a week, and bout 7-8hr shifts so i don't feel i will get burned out quickly but we will see.

When i was younger i worked in the bag room of a local private course.

I got a free bag, clubs, lessons and every monday or early evening was able to play.
Its what originaly got me into the game.

Ive actually thought about cadding these days. Not for the extra cash but for the exercise and ability to play there on Mondays.
