My season is starting off fairly well, except for one thing. I'm having a heck of a time releasing my hands at impact. On those rare swings that I actually do release I'm hitting the ball a ton. The rest of the time I lack power in my swing and I'm fighting a cut. Does anybody have any drills or, even better, swing thoughts that might help me with this? I'm starting to get frustrated.

Make sure you are staying at or behind the ball at and through impact. Staying there will "let" not "make" your hands release. Once you slide or make a forward move past the ball your hands will just drag leaving the clubface open. Try hitting a half a bucket of range balls toward the back of your stance with a 6 iron not watching the ball fly. When you start repeatedly hitting it pure. Move it up a hair and start again till you get to normal position. You will stay behind the ball strike it and release much better.

I am new at this, but I recently have been concentrating on my right palm slightly facing downward at the ground at impact and it has been producing a consistent draw and more distance. Maybe worth a shot.

relax your grip a little on backswing. I had the same problems before

get yourself a mclean power release club. they run about $75, i think. i bought one about a year and a half ago, and within two weeks, my hands were releasing whether i wanted them to or not. i found i actually couldn't NOT release, even when trying.

This is the problem I have been trying to work through. My hands end up coming ahead of the ball.

I have found that I don't want to think about release. When I manage to swing correct (doesn't happen all the time), the hands release themselves. Body movement, weight transfer and swing plane make up how I hit the ball. If my grip is right, (also an unwanted variable) I usually don't have to focus on it. Same goes with lag, which is directly related to release. I can't make myself force the lag, but when I swing how I think correct, it happens all by itself.

Rembemer that you don't want to swing and hit the ball, you just want to pass through the area of the ball. Releasing directly at the ball too early will send the ball high and short. I've got the same problem myself, but work on it.

Sounds exactly like a tip I heard Johnny Miller make when he was covering a recent PGA event.

It will definitely help get the club turning over. I've been trying to reduce grip pressure and overall tension reduction in my upper body throughout the swing. I'll focus a bit more at the range tomorrow morning on staying behind the ball.

This has always been one of my issues. I laterally slide past the ball causing an early release of my hands, I never get that look of release or right hand over left with arms extended past impact.

I have had pros look at my swing on video, and none have been able to get at the "root cause" of my slide and lack of hip rotation through impact. I am amazed at how far I hit my driver with such poor swing technique. And that I play to a solid 7 handicap with a swing like that. I wish I could get a pro that would really take the time to find the "cause" of my swing faults, as I think I would be in the low single digits very quickly.

I play a high cut normally so releasing my hands isn't my natural tendency however, if I need to produce a draw I simply think of getting my left elbow to point at the ground as I go through the hitting zone.

Think about Sergio's swing. Really wide arc in the backswing then bring your hands in tight to your body on the downswing. Gives you a load of power and lag if you release it at the right point

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
